X Launches 'X Money' Digital Payment & Banking Service for US Premium Users

· · 2 min read

Elon Musk's X has introduced 'X Money,' a new digital payments and banking service now available to Premium subscribers in the US. It offers deposit accounts, peer-to-peer payments, and a Visa debit card.

Elon Musk's social media platform X has officially launched 'X Money,' a new digital payments and banking service designed to integrate financial transactions directly into the social networking experience. Currently rolling out to X users in the United States with X Premium and Premium+ subscriptions, this move is a significant step towards transforming X into an all-in-one 'everything app.'

What X Money Offers

X Money aims to provide a comprehensive suite of banking features typically found in traditional financial institutions, all accessible within the X application. Key services include:

  • Deposit Accounts: Users can manage their funds directly within the platform.
  • Peer-to-Peer Payments: Seamlessly send money to other X users without transfer fees.
  • Visa Debit Card: Subscribers can apply for a physical Visa debit card, featuring a metal finish stamped with their X handle. This card reportedly offers 3% cashback on purchases and an annual percentage yield (APY) of up to 6.00% on deposits.
  • Direct Deposit: Facilitates receiving funds directly into X Money accounts.
  • Bill Payments & Wire Transfers: Tools for managing recurring expenses and larger financial transfers.
  • Physical Check Mailing: The service even supports sending physical checks.

The platform leverages Visa Direct technology for fast person-to-person transfers and real-time movement of funds.

How X Money Works Behind the Scenes

While X Money operates within the X app, it does not function as a bank itself. Instead, user funds are held by Cross River Bank, a regulated financial institution based in New Jersey. This partnership ensures that eligible deposits are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) for up to $250,000 per depositor. Additionally, X employs a cash sweep program, distributing customer balances across multiple partner banks to enhance security and stability.

Security and Future Plans

Security is a key focus for X Money, which supports modern authentication methods like passkeys. Users can access their accounts using fingerprint, face recognition, or their device's PIN, eliminating the need for traditional passwords. The service also includes various payment controls, such as transaction limits and verification for selected payments, to protect user accounts.

Elon Musk has indicated plans for a global rollout of X Money. However, an India launch remains unconfirmed at this time. Should it expand to India, X Money would enter a competitive market alongside established digital payment providers like Google Pay, WhatsApp Payments, and PhonePe.
