WhatsApp Launches Guest Calls: Join Voice & Video Without an Account or App

· · 2 min read

WhatsApp has rolled out a new guest calling feature, enabling non-users to join voice and video calls through a shared link. Participants can connect via a computer browser without needing an account or installing the app, though the host must approve their entry.

WhatsApp is expanding the accessibility of its communication platform by introducing a new guest calling feature. This update allows individuals to participate in voice and video calls even if they do not have a WhatsApp account or the application installed on their device.

The Meta-owned messaging service now permits non-users to join encrypted conversations simply by clicking a shared link. This functionality is particularly useful for online meetings, group discussions, or quick chats with contacts who prefer other messaging platforms.

How WhatsApp Guest Calls Work

  • The host of the call must possess an active WhatsApp account.
  • Hosts can generate a call link from the 'Calls' tab within the WhatsApp application by tapping the '+' icon.
  • This link can then be shared with invitees.
  • Guests open the link in a computer browser, enter their name, and request access to the call.
  • All guests remain in a waiting room until the host individually approves their entry.
  • Hosts retain the ability to remove guests at any point during the call.
  • Calls are free, end-to-end encrypted, and support up to 32 participants with no time limits.

Guest Capabilities and Limitations

Once approved, guests can actively participate in the call with several features:

  • Share their computer screens.
  • React using thumbs-up and heart emojis.
  • Raise their hands to ask questions.

However, guests have certain limitations:

  • They cannot view other participants' phone numbers.
  • They are unable to send messages within the call.
  • They cannot invite additional people to the conversation.

Future Integrations with Calendars

WhatsApp also plans to enhance call scheduling by introducing integrations with popular calendar services like Google Calendar and Outlook later this year. Once available, users will be able to create call links directly from their calendars and include them in event invitations. This will require installing a WhatsApp plugin and connecting the account, further streamlining the process for both account holders and guests.

This new functionality positions WhatsApp closer to services like Apple's FaceTime, which already offers similar link-based call joining for non-account holders, making it a more versatile tool for broader communication needs.
