iPhone users can now enjoy a significantly more seamless hands-free music experience with Spotify, thanks to a new integration introduced with iOS 27. The update allows Apple's virtual assistant, Siri, to recognize Spotify as the preferred music service, eliminating the need to explicitly say “on Spotify” for voice commands.
This convenience upgrade is particularly beneficial for scenarios where users cannot easily interact with their device, such as while driving, exercising, or performing other activities. The integration extends beyond playing individual tracks, supporting requests for podcasts, audiobooks, and even personalized playlists.
Enhanced Voice Commands for Spotify
With the updated Siri integration, eligible users can issue a variety of commands without naming the app. These include:
- Playing a specific song or album.
- Finding and playing podcasts or audiobooks.
- Selecting music tailored for a particular activity or mood.
- Accessing Spotify's popular DJ feature.
- Resuming previously played podcasts.
- Searching a user's personal music library.
- Creating AI-powered Prompted Playlists through voice commands, where users describe the desired music style or mood.
The Prompted Playlists feature, while not new to Spotify, gains a significant boost in accessibility through Siri, allowing for instant, context-driven music generation.
Requirements and Regional Availability
To take advantage of this enhanced Siri integration, users must have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer running iOS 27 or later. Additionally, Apple Intelligence must be enabled, and Siri must be set to English. The feature was announced on Tuesday, October 13, with a rollout dependent on device and region.
It is important to note that the rollout currently excludes the European Union. This exclusion is due to regulatory hurdles related to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which impacts how Apple’s newer Siri AI features are implemented. Users in regions where the integration is not yet available will still need to append “on Spotify” to their voice requests for now.
