WhatsApp Shifts AI Agent Pricing Model
Meta is introducing a new token-based pricing structure for its AI agents on WhatsApp Business, effective August 1, 2026. This change moves away from the previous per-message billing model, aiming to more accurately reflect the computational resources used by artificial intelligence in customer interactions and is part of a broader monetization strategy for the platform.
Understanding the New Token-Based Billing
Under the revised model, businesses will incur a global charge of $2 (approximately ₹189) for every one million tokens consumed by the Meta Business Agent. While the final cost depends on interaction complexity, a typical message could utilize around 25,000 tokens, translating to roughly 4 to 5 cents per message. This approach integrates both AI processing and message delivery into a single fee, mirroring trends seen with other AI providers like OpenAI and Anthropic.
Capabilities of the Meta Business Agent
The Meta Business Agent offers a range of functionalities designed to enhance customer support and sales. It can efficiently answer diverse customer queries, provide product recommendations, schedule appointments, qualify leads, and offer continuous 24/7 assistance. Crucially, the agent can also seamlessly transfer complex chats to a human representative when needed.
Access to the AI agent will vary: smaller businesses can utilize it through specific tiers of the WhatsApp Business Premium subscription, while larger enterprises will be billed directly based on their token usage.
Reintroduction of Service Message Fees
In addition to the AI agent pricing, Meta will reintroduce charges for non-template service messages sent outside the Meta Business Agent, effective October 1, 2026. These messages will be priced similarly to utility and authentication messages, with rates differing across markets. In India, for instance, such messages are currently set at ₹0.115 each, with volume discounts available for high-usage businesses. Meta plans to publish the updated rates by September 1, with quarterly revisions possible.
Meta's Broader Monetization Strategy
These pricing adjustments are part of Meta's ongoing efforts to further monetize WhatsApp Business, especially in key markets like India, which boasts an estimated 850 million users and contributes over $1 billion in annual business messaging revenue. The shift follows a previous transition to per-message pricing in July 2025, which replaced a conversation-based billing model.
