Teen's Innovation: Peanut Shells Reduce Pesticides on Produce

Arika Kundu, a 13-year-old Indian-American student, has developed a biosorption method using discarded peanut shells to significantly reduce pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables. Her innovation is a finalist in the 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

A Novel Approach to Food Safety

A 13-year-old Indian-American student from Minnesota is making waves in the scientific community with an innovative solution to a common problem: pesticide residues on fresh produce. Arika Kundu, a seventh-grade student at Minnetonka Middle School East, has developed a method that utilizes discarded peanut shells to effectively reduce these unwanted chemicals.

Her project, named LIGNEX: A Novel Biosorption-Based Approach, has earned her a spot among the top 10 finalists in the prestigious 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge. This national competition celebrates middle school students aged 11 to 14 who create science-based solutions for real-world issues.

Turning Waste into a Solution

Even after harvesting, pesticide residues can linger on the surface of fruits and vegetables. While conventional washing helps remove some dirt and chemicals, it often isn't enough to eliminate all residues. Arika's innovation offers a new, eco-friendly approach.

Instead of relying on costly materials, Arika turned her attention to something commonly discarded: peanut shells. Through a scientific process known as biosorption, she transforms these shells into a material capable of attracting and holding pesticide residues. This treated peanut-shell material acts much like a natural filter or sponge, capturing pesticides from the surface of produce upon contact, thereby reducing the overall chemical load.

The Road Ahead for LIGNEX

As a finalist, Arika will spend the summer months collaborating with a 3M scientist, refining her LIGNEX project. The culmination of her efforts will be the final round of the competition, scheduled for October 12 and 13 at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. There, she will present her refined innovation, participate in live challenges, and answer questions from a panel of judges.

The grand prize winner will be awarded $25,000 and the coveted title of "America's Top Young Scientist."

Beyond the Competition

Arika's aspirations extend beyond winning the competition. "I entered the 3M Young Scientists Challenge to improve my innovation and turn it into a product that everyone can benefit from," she stated. Having previously received the Minnesota State Merit Award, she hopes this national recognition will provide invaluable expert guidance from 3M scientists.

Looking further into the future, Arika envisions a career in space science, specifically as an astrobiologist specializing in computational biology. Brian Shaw, CEO of Discovery Education, lauded this year's finalists, emphasizing that scientific curiosity knows no age limit. He noted how these remarkable students pursued their ideas with persistence, turning simple concepts into meaningful innovations.

"The finalists of this year's 3M Young Scientist Challenge prove you can be a scientist at any age," Shaw said. "Each remarkable student pursued their curiosity with persistence, turning an idea into an innovation. We cannot wait to see where their ideas take them."

Over the years, the competition has fostered numerous young innovators whose projects have addressed critical issues such as food safety, water conservation, and energy use. Many past finalists have gone on to achieve significant milestones, including filing patents, delivering TED Talks, and launching nonprofit organizations.
