October 2026 proved to be another challenging month for the global technology sector, with over 5,000 job cuts reported worldwide. Industry giants including Amazon, Netflix, and eBay led the latest wave of workforce reductions, impacting thousands of employees across various divisions.
According to data from Layoffs.fyi, a total of 5,191 tech jobs were affected globally during the month. These cuts are part of a broader trend in the tech industry, where companies are actively restructuring their workforces and increasingly prioritizing investments in AI-led growth initiatives.
Major Companies Announce Significant Reductions
Among the companies making substantial cuts, Netflix announced the elimination of over 1,000 positions on October 14. This move impacted approximately 6% of the streaming giant's global workforce, with various departments, including product, technology, legal, and human resources, reportedly affected.
Later in the month, e-commerce powerhouse eBay revealed plans to lay off 9% of its workforce, impacting more than 1,100 employees. This follows an earlier round of roughly 800 job cuts by the company in February 2026.
Amazon also conducted multiple rounds of layoffs throughout October. While specific numbers remain unconfirmed, reports indicate that around 1,000 jobs were eliminated within its Stores division, which oversees retail and shopping operations. Additionally, on October 28, Amazon cut another 250 positions in its Devices and Services division, responsible for products such as Alexa, Echo devices, and other Amazon hardware.
A Difficult Year for Tech Employment
The October figures contribute to an already difficult year for tech employment. Ten months into 2026, over 135,000 tech jobs have been impacted by layoffs globally. The second quarter of 2026 was particularly challenging, with major players like Meta, Oracle, Amazon, and Microsoft implementing significant job cuts.
Beyond mandatory layoffs, some tech companies are also offering voluntary exit programs. Microsoft, for instance, extended voluntary exit offers to more than 60,000 employees across India, the US, the UK, and Canada during October. However, initial reports suggest that only about 3,000 employees have accepted these offers so far.
These ongoing workforce adjustments highlight a period of significant transition and uncertainty within the technology industry, driven by evolving market demands and strategic shifts towards emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
