TakeMe2Space Battery Proves Space-Ready on Skyroot Vikram-1 Launch

Hyderabad startup TakeMe2Space's PowerBank-50 battery successfully completed its first space mission aboard Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 rocket. This achievement marks India's first indigenous, commercially available satellite battery to earn crucial flight heritage, reducing reliance on imports.

India's First Private Orbital Mission Carried a Secret Weapon

When Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-1 rocket successfully lifted off from Sriharikota on July 18, it not only marked India's first privately developed rocket to reach orbit but also carried a critical, never-before-flown component: a compact battery built by Hyderabad-based startup TakeMe2Space. Days after the landmark launch, this PowerBank-50 battery returned with what every space hardware company covets – flight heritage.

The Gold Standard: Flight Heritage

In the challenging satellite industry, laboratory tests are merely the initial step. The true validation occurs in orbit, where components must endure the violent vibrations of launch before reliably operating in the harsh vacuum of space, through radiation exposure, and extreme temperature fluctuations. This is why "flight heritage" carries immense weight, as satellite manufacturers, launch providers, and insurers overwhelmingly favor hardware with a proven track record in space.

The PowerBank-50 has now crossed this crucial hurdle, having successfully powered Cosmoserve Space's experimental payload aboard Vikram-1's Orbital Adjustment Module at an altitude of 450 km.

"Every satellite mission lives or dies by its power system, which is why nobody wants to be the first to fly a new battery. Powering Satellites, Reducing Dependence

Every satellite relies on sunlight for power, but only when exposed to the Sun. During each orbit, satellites pass through Earth's shadow, necessitating batteries to keep all onboard systems operational. A battery failure can, and often does, lead to the premature end of an entire satellite mission.

For years, Indian satellite developers have largely depended on imported battery packs, often contending with high costs and extended procurement timelines. The advent of a flight-proven battery manufactured in India could significantly lower these barriers, particularly for startups, universities, and research institutions engaged in building small satellites.

PowerBank-50: Compact Design, Global Ambitions

The PowerBank-50 packs over 50 Wh of energy into a unit weighing a mere 380 grams. It integrates high-energy-density lithium-ion cells, an intelligent battery management system, onboard heating for extreme orbital temperatures, and continuous health monitoring that reports battery status to ground operators.

This versatile battery can be configured for CubeSats as well as larger microsatellites, boasting an expected operational life of up to five years in low-Earth orbit. TakeMe2Space has priced the PowerBank-50 at ₹1,04,900, positioning it as a cost-effective alternative to imported systems.

A Boost for India's Private Space Ecosystem

This achievement arrives at a pivotal moment for India's burgeoning commercial space industry. Vikram-1's successful mission cemented Skyroot Aerospace's position as the country's first private company to launch a rocket into orbit. By riding on this landmark launch, TakeMe2Space demonstrated that an Indian-built satellite battery can not only survive launch and operate in orbit but also earn the industry's most valuable credential.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lauded the accomplishment on social media, noting: "Brilliant! Until now, Indian satellite builders mostly had to import this critical component at high cost and long waiting times. TakeMe2Space's PowerBank-50 becomes first India-made satellite battery."

For India's rapidly expanding space sector, this milestone signifies more than just a single successful mission. It indicates that another critical component of the satellite supply chain can now be designed, built, and proven within India, potentially making future missions faster, more affordable, and less reliant on overseas suppliers.
