India's Data Center Capacity Set for Massive Expansion
According to Sumati Sahgal, Vice-President for Secure Power and Data Centres, Greater India Zone at Schneider Electric, India's data center capacity is on track for a substantial increase. Current estimates project a surge from 1.5 gigawatts (GW) to an impressive 6-7 GW by 2030. This growth is not confined to established tech hubs; investments are now extending into states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, moving beyond traditional centers such as Mumbai and Chennai.
Data centers currently contribute 15-20% of Schneider Electric's India revenue and are already experiencing double-digit growth. Sahgal emphasized that this segment is expected to accelerate even faster than the company's other core business areas over the next four to five years.

The aggressive expansion of India's data center industry is a direct response to several key trends: the rapid rise of AI workloads, widespread cloud adoption across enterprises, and substantial government and private investments in digital infrastructure. Research firm Astute Analytica projects India's data center market to reach an estimated $31.36 billion by 2035, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.37%.
Operators are increasingly building infrastructure closer to their customers to meet the demands of hyperscalers, colocation providers, and various enterprises. This distributed approach supports lower latency and higher efficiency for critical digital services.
