Samsung Smartwatch Predicts Fainting Minutes Before Onset, Study Finds

· · 2 min read

A joint study by Samsung and Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital found the Galaxy Watch 6 can accurately predict vasovagal syncope (fainting) up to five minutes in advance. This marks the first successful use of a commercial smartwatch for such a prediction.

A recent clinical study conducted jointly by Samsung and Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in Korea has revealed that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 can predict vasovagal syncope (VVS), a common type of fainting, minutes before it occurs. Published in the European Heart Journal Digital Health, this research represents the world’s first successful application of a commercial smartwatch for fainting prediction.

The study involved 132 patients exhibiting VVS symptoms. Researchers utilized the Galaxy Watch 6’s photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor and heart rate variability (HRV) data during controlled medical tests designed to induce fainting. An advanced AI algorithm then analyzed this health data, identifying early warning signs. The AI model successfully predicted potential fainting episodes up to five minutes in advance, achieving an impressive 84.6% overall accuracy.

Revolutionizing Preventive Healthcare

Jongmin Choi, Head of Health R&D Group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, emphasized the significance of these findings. “This study is an example of how wearable technology can help shift healthcare from being designed for ‘post-care’ to a model of ‘preventive care,” Choi stated. He further affirmed Samsung’s commitment to driving technological innovation that empowers users to lead healthier daily lives.

While VVS is generally not considered dangerous, sudden falls resulting from fainting can lead to serious injuries. The ability to predict these episodes could provide individuals with crucial time to take preventative measures, such as finding a safe place to sit or lie down, thereby mitigating injury risks.

Future Implications for Wearable Health Tech

Samsung has indicated plans to further enhance the health monitoring capabilities of its wearable portfolio and expand collaborations with leading medical institutions. Although there is no confirmation yet on whether this specific fainting prediction feature will be rolled out to other Galaxy Watch models, future watches equipped with the necessary health sensors, like PPG and HRV tracking, may support it.

This breakthrough underscores the growing potential of digital health and wearable technology in offering personalized, preventive health solutions, marking a significant step forward in proactive health management.
