New Delhi, India – Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026, highlighting the nation's ambitious expansion in semiconductor manufacturing. The three-day event, held at Yashobhoomi from September 17 to 19, serves as a crucial platform uniting global and domestic semiconductor firms, policymakers, investors, and researchers.
India's Expanded Semiconductor Vision
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi announced the significant expansion of the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, now backed by an impressive outlay of $13.5 billion. This marks a substantial increase from the initial phase's $8 billion commitment, underscoring India's dedication to becoming a global hub for chip technology. The mission aims to foster innovation, attract investment, and drive growth across the entire semiconductor ecosystem.
So far, twelve chip-making projects have received official approval, with government data confirming that three of these have already commenced commercial production. The Prime Minister indicated that more projects are anticipated under this expanded phase.
SEMICON India 2026: Building the Ecosystem
The 2026 edition of SEMICON India is themed "Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem," reflecting a strategic shift towards developing comprehensive capabilities across the semiconductor value chain, rather than focusing solely on individual chip initiatives. The event is a joint effort by the India Semiconductor Mission, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and SEMI.
This year's summit features over 600 exhibitors, including approximately 300 international companies, drawing delegates from more than 40 countries. Attendees can explore the "Sand to Silicon to Systems" Value Chain Experience, which illustrates various stages of semiconductor development, from chip design and wafer fabrication to assembly, testing, advanced packaging, materials, and equipment.
Key Focus Areas of Mission 2.0
The expanded India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 targets six critical areas to strengthen the domestic industry:
- Chip design
- Semiconductor equipment and materials
- Fabrication facilities
- Advanced packaging
- Research and development
- Talent development
With a total government outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore, SEMICON India 2026 is designed to forge partnerships and create opportunities that will significantly enhance India's capabilities in chip manufacturing and related advanced technologies.
