Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has expressed confidence that China is on track to develop its own advanced chipmaking machinery by the year 2030. His remarks highlight China's rapid technological advancements, even as the nation currently depends on foreign suppliers for the most sophisticated lithography equipment essential for producing advanced computer chips.
China's Current Chipmaking Landscape
Currently, China lacks access to lithography machines as advanced as those manufactured by companies like ASML. These highly precise tools use light-based processes to print minuscule circuit patterns onto silicon wafers, a crucial step in advanced semiconductor fabrication. This technological gap significantly limits China's ability to domestically produce cutting-edge semiconductors, compelling it to rely on imported technology for its most advanced chip needs.
Despite these limitations, Jensen Huang believes China will overcome this technological hurdle within the next few years. In an interview with The All-In Podcast, Huang stated, "They are going to get there by 2030." He emphasized China's strength in high-volume production, suggesting that the development of such advanced machinery is "just a matter of time." Huang added that "two or three years is just a click; it is nothing. So as far as they are concerned, they are already there," underscoring his belief in China's swift progress.
Domestic Progress and Challenges
Shanghai Micro Electronics Equipment (SMEE) stands as China's leading domestic lithography equipment manufacturer. SMEE currently mass-produces 193-nm ArF dry scanners, machines capable of manufacturing chips using a 90nm-class process. While this represents significant domestic capability, it falls short of today's most advanced chip technologies.
Reports suggest SMEE has developed a more advanced ArF immersion scanner designed for 28nm chips. However, there is no public evidence of these more advanced machines being produced and deployed at the scale required for high-volume advanced chip manufacturing. Despite these challenges, Huang remains enthusiastic about China's pace in advancing its technology for developing advanced computer chips, noting that China's AI industry is "right behind" leading frontier labs in the United States.
