Reliance Jio is preparing to introduce a new artificial intelligence-powered voice assistant, dubbed 'Jio Call Agent,' designed to integrate directly into its telecom network. This service, anticipated to roll out later this year, aims to bring AI capabilities to over 500 million subscribers without requiring a separate application download.
Seamless AI Integration for Over Half a Billion Users
The announcement was made by Reliance Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash Ambani during Reliance Industries' 49th annual general meeting. Ambani highlighted that Jio Call Agent will be a native AI voice assistant, accessible across Jio’s extensive user base and supporting multiple Indian languages, thereby broadening access to AI services beyond English-speaking users.
Users will be able to summon the assistant into an ongoing call by simply saying “Hey Jio,” provided all other participants consent to its presence. Jio is positioning this service as a personal AI concierge operating within standard voice calls, rather than a standalone chatbot.
Advanced Capabilities for Call Management and Transactions
- Real-time Transcription: The assistant can transcribe calls instantly and differentiate between up to 10 speakers during conference calls.
- Intelligent Summaries: It can prepare concise summaries of conversations, extract key action points, and create reminders that can be shared with participants post-call.
- In-call Transactions: Jio Call Agent is designed to facilitate transactions while a call is active. Users could, for example, ask the assistant to order food, reserve a restaurant table, book a cab, or schedule a meeting without having to leave the conversation.
This initiative marks Jio's strategic move to embed generative AI directly into one of its most widely utilized services. Unlike many existing AI assistants that often require dedicated applications, subscriptions, or specific compatible devices, Jio Call Agent will function at the network level, offering a more integrated experience.
Part of a Broader AI Ecosystem Vision
The launch of Jio Call Agent is a component of Reliance Industries' larger vision to establish a comprehensive, end-to-end AI ecosystem. This ecosystem encompasses critical computing infrastructure, enterprise hosting solutions, and various consumer-facing products.
Reliance Intelligence, the group’s dedicated AI subsidiary, is actively developing a large-scale sovereign AI infrastructure in Jamnagar, India. The initial 120-megawatt phase of this project is expected to be commissioned by the close of 2026. The company is also deploying an initial fleet of Nvidia’s GB300 graphics processing units to power this advanced AI infrastructure.
This platform aims to provide domestic hosting for AI models, ensuring enterprises maintain greater control over their data and intellectual property. According to Ambani, Reliance Intelligence will offer sovereign AI hosting within India, guaranteeing full model transparency and portability, and empowering enterprises to retain ownership of their AI models while operating on India’s own AI infrastructure.
