Deepinder Goyal Launches Temple Wearable Pre-Orders
Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal has announced that pre-orders for his innovative health-tech wearable, Temple, are now officially open. The announcement follows the release of an internal study claiming the device surpasses leading competitors, including the Apple Watch, in critical heart rate measurement accuracy.
Goyal shared the pre-order link on X, leading to a temporary website disruption due to high traffic, which was quickly resolved. Interested buyers can place orders via the company's website or mobile application.
Temple's Unique Design and Pricing
Temple distinguishes itself from conventional smartwatches and fitness bands by being a head-worn device. It attaches near the temple using an adhesive, designed to monitor physiological signals such as changes in blood flow. This unique placement is central to its claimed performance.
The initial batch of Temple wearables is offered through a made-to-order model, with manufacturing commencing after an order is placed. Deliveries are anticipated approximately three months from the purchase date. While the final retail price has not been formally confirmed, early-access listings suggest a price point of around Rs 85,000, which reportedly includes a lifetime subscription to the service.
Internal Study Claims Superior Heart Rate Accuracy
Earlier, Goyal unveiled findings from a white paper detailing an internal study that compared Temple's heart rate tracking capabilities against five prominent wearable devices: Apple Watch, WHOOP MG, Fitbit Air, Garmin FR970, and Oura Ring 5. For reference, a Polar H10 chest strap, taped to participants' chests to ensure consistent contact, was used.
The study asserts that Temple recorded the lowest mean absolute error in heart rate across all measured conditions, notably excelling in high-intensity zones (4 & 5) crucial for professional athletes. The Apple Watch Series 12 was reportedly the closest competitor in the comparison, though its error rates remained higher than Temple's across the tested conditions.
"All the other leading wearables were well behind Temple in our study. Apple Watch Series 12 came closest. Temple also beat the untaped chest strap, the industry's benchmark, in zones 4 and 5," Goyal stated.
Why Temple Claims the Edge
Goyal attributes Temple's purported superior accuracy to two primary factors: its adhesive attachment and its strategic placement on the body. The adhesive ensures the device maintains consistent contact, replicating lab-condition stability in real-world use during intense activity.
Furthermore, the temple region, situated directly over a major artery, is described as an optimal site for heart rate measurement because it's one of the few skin patches that doesn't restrict blood flow during strenuous exercise. Goyal indicated that this foundational accuracy in heart rate tracking could significantly enhance other downstream metrics and insights generated by the device.
Independent Research Underway
Temple has made its full study paper and supporting data publicly available on its website, temple.com/science. The company is actively inviting further independent replication and validation of its findings, with an extended study involving independent researchers already underway. Goyal confirmed that Temple plans to fund additional research in various conditions, encouraging interested researchers to contact the company.
