Instagram Edits Brings AI Video Tools to Mac, Challenging CapCut

· · 2 min read

Meta has launched its Instagram Edits video editing app on Mac, introducing advanced desktop controls and AI-assisted features for creators. This expansion aims to compete directly with established tools like ByteDance's CapCut.

Meta is extending its video editing ambitions beyond smartphones, bringing its Instagram Edits application to Mac desktop users. This move equips creators with sophisticated controls and AI-powered assistance, intensifying competition within the rapidly growing short-form video tool market, particularly against ByteDance's CapCut.

Advanced Editing and AI Integration

The desktop version of Instagram Edits significantly enhances the editing workflow. A key addition is support for AI agents via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling compatible AI assistants to help with initial video assembly and rough cuts. This allows creators to streamline their process before refining edits manually.

Creators will find a more detailed workspace on Mac, offering capabilities previously limited to professional desktop software. This includes working with multiple video and audio tracks, utilizing keyframes for dynamic transitions, and making precise cuts with visual audio waveforms. For granular control over video aesthetics, the app provides color wheels, curves, and log conversion tools.

Creator-Centric Features and Direct Publishing

Instagram Edits for Mac also introduces several features designed to empower creators. Users can import custom fonts and Look-Up Tables (LUTs), personalize keyboard shortcuts, and access Instagram’s extensive licensed music library. The application supports automatic captions in various languages and offers hundreds of built-in sound and video effects.

A significant convenience for content producers is the direct publishing option. Finished videos can be uploaded straight to Instagram, complete with tagging, location details, and the ability to utilize Trial Reels. The app accommodates both horizontal and vertical video formats, catering to diverse content needs.

Availability and Future Outlook

Currently, Instagram Edits for Mac is available for desktop users, though Meta has not announced plans for Windows or Linux versions. The company is also developing a feature that will allow seamless project transfers, enabling creators to start editing on a phone and continue on a computer, or vice-versa.

Meta initially launched the Edits app last year as a smartphone-first alternative to CapCut, quickly gaining traction with over 50 million active users. This desktop expansion signals Meta's commitment to attracting a broader range of creators who require more robust editing capabilities than mobile devices can typically offer.
