Indian Shoppers: Learn 9 Common Online Scams and How to Avoid Them

· · 4 min read

As India's e-commerce expands, online shopping scams are increasingly sophisticated. A new handbook identifies nine common frauds targeting Indian consumers, offering vital precautions to protect money and personal data.

Online Shopping Scams Rise with E-commerce Growth

India's digital economy is booming, with online shopping becoming a preferred choice for millions. However, this rapid expansion, coupled with the popularity of digital payments, has also created fertile ground for cybercriminals. They employ increasingly sophisticated tactics, from crafting fake websites to impersonating customer support, all designed to defraud unsuspecting consumers.

To combat this rising threat, the Mission GraHAQ Handbook, a consumer awareness initiative backed by the Safer Internet India coalition, has outlined nine prevalent online shopping scams. Staying informed is presented as the most crucial defense against these evolving digital threats.

Understanding the 9 Common Online Shopping Scams in India

1. Fake Websites and Phishing Links

Fraudsters create convincing replica websites of legitimate shopping portals or send phishing emails and SMS messages. These often claim issues with delivery or account problems, aiming to trick users into revealing sensitive information like OTPs, UPI credentials, or debit/credit card details.

  • Precaution: Always verify the website address, ensuring it starts with "https://". Avoid clicking on suspicious links received via messages or emails.

2. Fake Delivery Scams

Scammers sometimes send unsolicited Cash-on-Delivery (CoD) packages containing low-value items or empty boxes. Their hope is that recipients will pay without verifying if an order was actually placed by someone in their household.

  • Precaution: Before accepting or paying for any unexpected parcel, confirm with family members if such an order was made.

3. "Too-Good-To-Be-True" Deals

Many fake websites and social media advertisements lure shoppers with massive, often irresistible, discounts on popular products. These offers are typically a ruse to steal money or deliver counterfeit goods.

"Technology and enforcement continue to play an important role in tackling online fraud but as fraudsters constantly adapt their tactics, consumer awareness becomes the first and most effective line of defence," said Vivan Sharan, Founder, Safer Internet India.
  • Precaution: Compare prices across trusted platforms, meticulously verify seller details, and resist impulse purchases based solely on extreme promotional offers.

4. Empty Box Scams

This scam involves buyers receiving packages that are either empty or contain products entirely different from what was ordered. This can happen even on seemingly legitimate platforms if the seller is fraudulent.

  • Precaution: Always opt for trusted shopping platforms, thoroughly check seller reviews, and use payment methods that offer robust buyer protection policies.

5. Payment Diversion Scams

Some deceptive sellers attempt to steer customers away from the e-commerce platform's official payment gateway. They might request payments via QR codes, SMS links, or third-party websites.

"India's digital economy can realise its full potential only when trust keeps pace with technology," stated Rakesh Bakshi, Vice President – Legal, Amazon India.
  • Precaution: Always complete transactions through the official checkout process on the platform. Payments made externally may not be covered by buyer protection.

6. Fake Urgency Scams

These scams involve messages designed to create panic or a sense of urgency. Examples include claims that an order will be cancelled within minutes or limited-time discounts that require immediate payment decisions.

  • Precaution: Pause and verify the information directly through the official website or app. Ignore artificial deadlines designed to rush your decision.

7. Delivery Box Scams

Even after a successful delivery, scammers can exploit personal information printed on discarded delivery boxes. They might use this data to contact customers with fake feedback requests or fraudulent discount offers.

  • Precaution: Always remove or thoroughly destroy address labels and any personal information before disposing of packaging. Be wary of unsolicited links.

8. Fake Customer Support Accounts

Cybercriminals frequently monitor social media for customer complaints. They then impersonate customer care executives to collect personal information or redirect users to malicious websites under the guise of offering help.

  • Precaution: Interact only through verified customer support channels found on the official website or app. Never share banking credentials via social media or unverified contacts.

9. Membership Renewal Scams

Fraudsters impersonate subscription services, sending messages that warn memberships are about to expire. These messages typically direct users to fake payment pages to capture their financial details.

"The most effective way to combat online fraud is to prevent it before it happens. That requires making digital safety simple, practical and accessible for every citizen," emphasized Krishna Devarayalu Lavu, Member of Parliament.
  • Precaution: Ignore unsolicited renewal reminders. Instead, log in to the official website or mobile app of the service to verify your subscription status before making any payments.
