The Indian government has summoned Meta's global representatives for urgent discussions regarding content moderation systems and practices, according to IT Secretary S. Krishnan. The high-level meetings are scheduled for August 5 and 6, where officials will seek explanations and solutions from the technology giant.
Krishnan emphasized the government's concern over various issues, including lapses in handling child sexual abuse material (CSAM), instances of wrongful action against prominent user accounts, and the moderation of synthetically generated information. He stated, "We would like to understand from them (Meta) as to why some of these things have not been working the way they are supposed to work, and what are the challenges."
The IT Secretary highlighted that a major technology company like Meta, a leader in the tech industry, should possess robust systems that function effectively and prevent such errors. The dialogue aims to address these operational failures and ensure accountability.
This summons follows a recent controversy involving the removal of a post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Facebook, which further intensified scrutiny of Meta's platform policies. The government is now seeking comprehensive explanations about the content removal process, automated moderation systems, and the overall accountability mechanisms employed by the company.
