Google Wallet Adds Aadhaar Support in India for Secure Digital Identity

· · 2 min read

Google Wallet now enables users in India to securely store their Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials, creating a digital-first identity solution. This integration aims to streamline identity verification across various physical and digital services with enhanced privacy.

Google Wallet has expanded its digital identity capabilities in India, allowing users to securely store their Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials directly on their devices. This move marks a significant step towards a "secure, digital-first ID" for everyday use cases, according to the tech giant.

The integration, part of a broader global rollout of secure digital IDs, enables Indian citizens to prove their identity without needing to physically present their Aadhaar card. Google emphasizes that privacy and security are paramount to this rollout, ensuring that personal data remains protected.

Enhancing Privacy and Security for Digital IDs

Google has stressed that for digital credentials to be truly useful, they must be secure, private, and effective across both physical and digital environments. The company's approach incorporates advanced privacy features, such as "selective disclosure." This functionality ensures that only the absolutely necessary details of a person's identity are shared when required, giving users greater control over their personal information.

This initiative builds upon Google's ongoing partnership with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the statutory body responsible for Aadhaar enrollment and authentication.

Key Partners and Use Cases

The initial ecosystem of partners integrating with Google Wallet's Aadhaar support spans various sectors where identity verification is crucial. These include:

  • PVR INOX: For age verification and rewards programs at entertainment venues.
  • BharatMatrimony: To verify user profiles, enhancing trust and authenticity on the platform.
  • Atlys: A visa services platform, leveraging the digital ID for auto-filling applications.
  • Mygate: A residential management platform, for verifying visitors entering gated communities.

Additionally, the gig economy platform Snabbit is expected to integrate these digital identity checks in the near future, further expanding the utility of Aadhaar Verifiable Credentials in Google Wallet.

Global Expansion of Digital Identity Solutions

Alongside the India-specific rollout, Google is also extending its digital ID capabilities to other international markets. Users in Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil can now create and store ID passes based on their passport information within Google Wallet. This global expansion aims to provide a simple and private method for verifying identity or age for various in-person and online services, such as signing into accounts.

Google reiterates that security, privacy, and interoperability form the foundation of its digital identity strategy, with these principles integrated into every layer of the new system.
