Zerodha founder and CEO Nithin Kamath has voiced significant concern over a reported decline in reading and mathematics skills among teenagers globally. Citing data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Kamath raised a critical question: could the growing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in daily life and education lead to increased human dependence on machines, thereby eroding fundamental skills?
Declining Academic Performance: The OECD Perspective
Kamath shared insights from the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which evaluates 15-year-olds' proficiency in reading, mathematics, and science. The data reveals a noticeable drop in average scores across 23 OECD nations, particularly in reading and mathematics. The OECD estimates that a 20-point decrease on the PISA scale is roughly equivalent to one year of schooling.
While acknowledging that the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated school closures likely contributed to this deterioration, Kamath suggests that a longer-term trend may be at play, now further complicated by the emergence of AI.
Personal Experience Fuels Concern
Kamath's apprehension stems partly from his own experience. He revealed that he frequently uses AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude to review his writing, correcting grammar and typos. This reliance, he noted, has lessened his personal incentive to perfect these skills independently. "Over time, I genuinely feel like my writing without AI is getting worse," he stated.
He has also inquired with Zerodha's Chief Technology Officer about whether a similar pattern is emerging within the company's tech teams, given AI's increasing role in coding processes.
The AI Learning Dilemma
The situation presents a complex dilemma for educational institutions and workplaces alike: AI offers enhanced productivity but potentially at the cost of reducing the cognitive effort individuals exert themselves. For students, this trade-off is particularly intricate. Developing robust thinking, writing, and problem-solving abilities often requires grappling with challenges and learning from mistakes.
However, students also need to master AI tools, as they are becoming indispensable in future academic and professional environments. The central question, therefore, shifts from whether children should use AI to when and how they should integrate it into their learning.
The Path of Least Resistance
Kamath suggests that human behavioral patterns could exacerbate the issue. "Given a choice between an easy thing and a hard thing, we'll almost always choose the easy path," he wrote. AI makes this easy path nearly frictionless, allowing students to generate content or solutions rapidly, and adults to draft communications with minimal effort.
While the immediate gains in efficiency are clear, the long-term impact on the development and retention of essential skills remains uncertain. Kamath concluded his post with a satirical comparison to the film Idiocracy, where human intelligence has dramatically declined. Though an exaggeration, his underlying message is serious: if AI increasingly handles our thinking, how do we ensure humans continue to cultivate their own critical thought processes?
The PISA data alone doesn't definitively link AI to weaker academic performance. Nevertheless, as AI becomes deeply embedded in education and work, the discussion is evolving from how much AI people should use to how much independent thinking they must strive to maintain.
