Google Meet Rolls Out to Android Auto, Excludes Work Accounts

· · 2 min read

Google Meet is now available on Android Auto, allowing users to join scheduled calls directly from their car's display. However, a significant limitation prevents the use of work profile accounts, restricting functionality for professional users.

Google Meet Integrates with Android Auto

Google Meet is officially rolling out support for Android Auto, bringing in-car connectivity for video conferencing participants. This feature allows users to view their scheduled meetings and join calls directly from their car's display, aiming to keep drivers focused on the road.

Upon connecting a device to Android Auto and selecting the Meet app, users can instantly join calls. The system is designed for safety, automatically switching the phone to a simplified on-the-go mode. For users with personal Google accounts, this offers a new level of convenience for managing their daily schedules while commuting.

Key Limitation: No Work Account Support

A crucial restriction accompanies the Android Auto integration: Google Meet does not support work profile accounts. This means that while active calls might still appear on the display, upcoming meetings and call history associated with work profiles will not be shown.

This limitation is particularly notable given that work accounts are often the primary users of such productivity features in vehicles. In contrast, when Google Meet launched on Apple CarPlay, there was no explicit mention of a similar work account restriction, making the Android Auto limitation a significant point of difference.

Features Available on Android Auto

  • Join Scheduled Calls: Users can access a "Scheduled" tab displaying meetings from their calendar and join them directly.
  • Microphone Control: The option to mute and unmute the microphone is available for call participants.
  • Simplified Display: Only call information and essential controls are visible on the car's screen, ensuring minimal distraction.

Disabled Features for Driver Safety

To adhere to safety standards and minimize distractions, several Google Meet features are intentionally disabled when using Android Auto:

  • Video: Video feeds are automatically disabled during calls.
  • Pre-Call Screen: The usual pre-call setup screen is skipped for quicker access.
  • Interactive Features: Features like Hand Raise, Q&A, and Polls are not available.
  • Presentations: Sharing or viewing presentations is not supported.
  • Participant View: Other call participants are not shown on the display.

Google Meet's Android Auto support is expected to become more widely available to users in the near future, enhancing in-car communication with a strong emphasis on driver safety.
