Visakhapatnam, India – Google has announced a monumental $15 billion investment to construct a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The foundation for this ambitious project was laid on April 28, 2026, by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, marking a significant step towards bolstering India's digital future.
Bikash Kolay, Vice President of Global Infrastructure at Google Cloud, described the facility as a “blueprint for a full-stack AI ecosystem,” highlighting its immense scale and ambition. This investment represents Google's largest commitment to India's digital landscape, aiming to support the nation's vision for 'Viksit Bharat 2047'.
A 1-Gigawatt AI Campus
Spanning an expansive 600 acres across Rambilli, Adavivaram, and Tarluvada in Visakhapatnam, the new hub is designed to be a 1-gigawatt-scale campus. Its primary function will be to power critical Google services, including Gemini and Search, for millions of users across the region, addressing the growing computational demands of the AI era.
Kolay emphasized that this project transcends a typical data center investment. It is envisioned as a foundational pillar of India’s digital and AI infrastructure, significantly strengthening the country's global connectivity.
Strategic Connectivity and Partnerships
A crucial component of the Vizag AI hub is the development of an international subsea cable landing station. This strategic addition will introduce “micro-diversity” to India’s network infrastructure, reducing the current concentration of international data traffic through landing points in Mumbai and Chennai, thereby mitigating potential bottlenecks.
The initiative also involves a consortium of strategic partners. Collaborations with entities such as Adani Group, FedEx, Bharti Airtel, and Nextera Energy are set to build essential supporting infrastructure, including robust power transmission networks and substantial clean energy capacity, ensuring the hub's operational efficiency and sustainability.
Economic Impact and Talent Development
Beyond its technological advancements, the Google Vizag AI hub is expected to generate significant economic and talent development opportunities. Google plans to train over 125,000 students in crucial cloud and AI skills, preparing a future-ready workforce for the evolving digital economy. Additionally, the project will upskill more than 1,000 local workers, integrating them into technical roles within the facility.
The company is also committed to sustainability, working on a comprehensive watershed master plan. This plan aims to ensure long-term water security and agricultural resilience in the Visakhapatnam region, aligning the project's technological ambitions with critical environmental goals.
