Former ISRO Chief Somanath Joins Agnikul Board for Reusable Rocket Test

· · 2 min read

Former ISRO Chairman S. Somanath has joined Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos's board as an observer. His expertise will guide the startup's ambitious Mission 02, which aims to recover its Agnibaan rocket's first stage and test an orbital upper stage.

S. Somanath, the former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has joined the board of Agnikul Cosmos, a Chennai-based space startup, as an observer. His appointment comes as Agnikul prepares for its most complex mission to date, designated Mission 02.

Mission 02: Ambitious Recovery and Orbital Operations

Agnikul's upcoming Mission 02 represents a significant leap from its initial suborbital test flight in May 2024. This new mission focuses on two groundbreaking objectives for its Agnibaan rocket. Firstly, it will attempt to recover the rocket's first stage after launch, a critical step towards developing fully reusable launch vehicles. This involves a controlled descent and recovery from the ocean, demanding precise coordination across propulsion, guidance, avionics, and structural systems.

Secondly, Mission 02 will test whether the Agnibaan's upper stage can remain operational in orbit as a functional platform after deploying its satellite payload. This innovative architecture aims to transform the upper stage from a disposable component into a valuable, extended-use asset in space. The ability to reuse rocket components is crucial for reducing manufacturing costs and increasing launch frequency, driving down the overall expense of space access.

Expert Guidance for Technical Frontiers

Agnikul co-founder and chief operating officer Moin SPM emphasized the engineering challenges, stating, "Booster recovery requires precision at every layer, propulsion, guidance, structural, avionics, and the upper stage extension pushes us into territory that few teams globally have operated in." Co-founder and chief executive Srinath Ravichandran highlighted the seriousness of Somanath's appointment, calling it "a serious working relationship at a serious moment."

Somanath, who led ISRO through historic missions like Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1, will provide critical advisory support as Agnikul navigates these complex technical hurdles. He views Mission 02 as a "genuine technical frontier, for India and, in several respects, for the world." Somanath specifically praised Agnikul's "convertible upper stage concept, combined with indigenous semi-cryogenic propulsion and a 3D-printed engine that can be produced in days," recognizing it as a robust and defensible technical strategy for the future of space exploration.
