HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan to Retire; Kaizad Bharucha Eyed for Top Role

· · 3 min read

HDFC Bank CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan will retire on October 26, 2026, opting not to seek reappointment. Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha, a 28-year veteran, emerges as a leading internal candidate for the critical leadership position.

Sashidhar Jagdishan, the Managing Director and CEO of HDFC Bank, India's largest private sector lender, has decided not to seek reappointment for his position. He will officially retire from the bank upon the close of business hours on October 26, 2026, less than two months before his second term was set to conclude.

Jagdishan's decision initiates an urgent leadership search for HDFC Bank, which has recently faced scrutiny over corporate governance matters. The spotlight now falls on Kaizad Bharucha, the bank’s Deputy Managing Director, as a prominent internal candidate for the top executive role.

Kaizad Bharucha: An Internal Frontrunner

Kaizad Bharucha, 60, has been an integral part of HDFC Bank since its inception in October 1995. He is the longest-serving executive board member, joining the board in 2014 and assuming the Deputy MD role in April 2023. Bharucha is credited with playing a crucial role in establishing the bank's robust credit and risk frameworks, which have supported its consistent growth and resilience through various economic conditions.

His long tenure and deep institutional knowledge position him as a strong contender, potentially offering continuity in leadership during a pivotal time for the bank.

Recent Leadership Changes and Scrutiny

Jagdishan's exit follows a period of heightened attention on HDFC Bank's corporate governance. Earlier this year, part-time chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned citing differences over ethics and values. Issues also surfaced regarding alleged mis-selling at the bank's Dubai International Financial Centre branch, leading to employee terminations. Furthermore, Jagdishan, along with CFO Srinivasan Vaidyanathan and group head (retail assets) Arvind Vohra, faced fines in a separate matter concerning alleged misclassification of marketing expenses related to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation.

Jagdishan's tenure as MD and CEO began in 2020, succeeding Aditya Puri, and he was reappointed in 2023. His career at HDFC Bank spanned over three decades, starting as a manager in the finance department in 1996.

The Road Ahead for HDFC Bank

The HDFC Bank board has announced its intention to "fast-track the process for selection and appointment of his successor well within time." However, any new appointment requires approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which has previously rejected proposed candidates for other banks, necessitating a return to the drawing board for lenders.

While an internal candidate like Bharucha offers continuity, the bank may also explore external options, especially given recent departures of other senior executives. Bhavesh Zaveri, an executive director, retired in April 2026, and Rahul Shyam Shukla, another senior executive, resigned in October 2025. With limited time before Jagdishan's retirement, HDFC Bank might need to consider an interim arrangement until a permanent successor receives regulatory clearance.
