· · 2 min read

Meta's Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger platforms experienced a widespread global outage on Sunday, July 19, 2026. Thousands of users reported login errors and content loading issues, initially fearing hacking attempts.

Meta's primary social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, were struck by a significant global outage on Sunday, July 19, 2026. Users worldwide reported widespread login errors and service disruptions, leading to initial concerns about potential hacking.

Widespread Disruptions and User Impact

The outage, which began just before 09:30 BST, affected users across the UK, the US, parts of Europe, and India. Many users attempting to access Facebook via desktop web browsers were greeted with an explicit error message stating, "Account Temporarily Unavailable. Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes."

Instagram users also faced considerable issues. New content failed to load, feeds appeared blank, and the platform exhibited extreme latency. While some mobile app functionalities remained intact, thousands of mobile users also experienced abrupt logouts and difficulties posting content.

Tracking the Outage and User Reactions

Outage monitor Downdetector flagged a severe surge in reports, indicating a multi-thousand complaint spike across Meta's services. The sudden and widespread logouts prompted many users to migrate to alternative platforms, such as X (formerly Twitter), to verify the situation and share their experiences.

As of the reporting time, Meta's official status page had not been updated to reflect the technical issues. The company had also not issued a formal statement regarding the root cause of the outage or provided an estimated timeline for resolution.
