Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei explained the viral India AI Impact Summit moment where he and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared to refuse to hold hands. Amodei attributed the incident to the event's "extremely disorganised" nature, not corporate rivalry.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has offered a straightforward explanation for one of the most widely discussed moments from the India AI Impact Summit earlier this year. The incident, which went viral, showed Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman seemingly refusing to hold hands on stage, sparking speculation about the intense rivalry between their respective artificial intelligence companies and their personal dynamic.

However, Amodei clarified in a recent interview that the episode had less to do with corporate drama and more with the chaotic nature of the event itself. "The summit was extremely disorganised," Amodei told Bloomberg. He elaborated that participants, including himself, were brought on stage at the last minute, and the standing order was changed just before a photo opportunity, followed by an instruction for everyone to hold hands.

Amodei emphasized that his criticism was not specific to India, noting that many international summits involving heads of state often suffer from significant disorganization. He recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi being present on stage when the instruction to hold hands was given.

Beyond the Summit: Amodei's Departure from OpenAI

Amodei's remarks come amidst ongoing interest in the competition between Anthropic and OpenAI, two key players in the global AI race. Amodei, his sister Daniela Amodei, and several colleagues departed OpenAI in 2021 to establish Anthropic, which has since distinguished itself with a strong focus on AI safety.

During the interview, Amodei also delved into his reasons for leaving OpenAI. He stated that disagreements over AI safety, while present, were not the sole catalyst for the split. Instead, a more fundamental issue of trust proved decisive. "When you feel that you can't trust someone, when you feel that their values are not what they say they are, when you feel that they're not honest, when you feel that they're not in it for the reasons that they say, when you see disturbing patterns of behavior and dishonesty, that makes it very hard to continue to work with a company," Amodei explained.

He expressed being "completely at peace" with his decision to part ways. Amodei believes that when visions diverge and trust erodes, the best resolution is for parties to pursue their separate paths, allowing the market and public opinion to ultimately determine their success.
