Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan, a distinguished computer scientist and engineer born in Chennai, India, has been named the 2026 recipient of the prestigious Arthur M. Bueche Award by the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE). This significant recognition highlights his extensive leadership in advancing fundamental science, technology, and policy, promoting translational research, and strengthening opportunities across the United States.
Panchanathan's achievement is historic, as he is the first Indian American and the first person from Arizona to receive this honor in its more than four-decade history. The award will be formally presented in October 2026 at the National Academy of Engineering's annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
A Journey Sparked by Curiosity
Born on June 24, 1961, Panchanathan's fascination with science began at an early age. In 1969, at just eight years old, he visited the American Centre in Chennai with his father to witness rocks brought back from the Moon by NASA's Apollo 11 mission. While the lunar samples were remarkable, it was the immense human ingenuity and scientific expertise behind their retrieval that profoundly inspired his career path.
His academic journey began with a BSc in Physics from the University of Madras in 1981, followed by a BE in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science in 1984. He then earned an MTech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Madras in 1986 before moving to Canada to complete a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Ottawa.
Pioneering Research and Academic Leadership
Dr. Panchanathan has dedicated over three decades to academia, research, technology, and government. His research spans critical areas including machine learning, multimedia computing, haptic interfaces, and ubiquitous computing.
Since joining Arizona State University (ASU) in 1997, he founded the Centre for Cognitive Ubiquitous Computing (CUbiC), an initiative focused on developing technologies to enhance accessibility and create assistive applications. His prolific academic record includes nearly 500 research publications and the mentorship of over 150 graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, engineers, and scientists.
From Academia to National Science Leadership
Panchanathan's influence extended beyond academic research into significant government roles. At ASU, he served as executive vice president of the Knowledge Enterprise and chief research and innovation officer, overseeing the university's vast research and innovation activities.
In 2014, he became the first Indian American to serve on the US National Science Board, later chairing its Committee on Strategy and Budget. His most prominent government position was as the 15th director of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) from 2020 to 2025. During his tenure, he guided the agency through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and spearheaded the creation of the Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships—the NSF's first new directorate in over three decades—designed to accelerate scientific discoveries into societal and economic applications.
Current Focus and Future Endeavors
Having concluded his term at the NSF, Dr. Panchanathan has returned to Arizona State University as University Professor of Technology and Innovation and Foundation Chair in Computing and Augmented Intelligence. His current work focuses on cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and the future of higher education.
In April 2026, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego appointed him to lead the city's quantum strategy, further cementing his role in shaping the future of technology. The Arthur M. Bueche Award adds to an already impressive list of honors, including his election to the National Academy of Engineering in 2024 and the Padma Shri in 2025 for his profound contributions to science and engineering.
