Apple has introduced its inaugural foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, to the Indian market, presenting a significant challenge to the country's burgeoning ultra-premium segment. With a starting price of ₹2,99,900, the device aims to gauge the willingness of affluent Indian consumers to embrace Apple's innovative, yet costly, foldable technology.
High Price, High Stakes
The iPhone Duo is available in India with a 256GB model priced at ₹2,99,900, a 512GB version at ₹3,24,900, and a 1TB variant reaching ₹3,74,900. This pricing positions the Duo firmly in the exclusive ultra-premium category, testing the financial limits of even loyal Apple customers.
Analysts cited by Mint predict Apple could sell between 1.5 lakh and 2 lakh units of the iPhone Duo in India by 2027. This would secure a notable share of the overall Indian foldable smartphone market, which is projected to reach approximately 1.2 million units by the same year.
Who Will Pay? The Target Audience
The primary target for the iPhone Duo in India is not the broad smartphone market, but rather a niche segment of affluent iPhone users, staunch brand loyalists, and early technology adopters. Counterpoint Research director Tarun Pathak noted that the pricing remains untested against typical Indian consumer budgets, making this demographic crucial for initial sales.
India currently boasts nearly 40 million active iPhone users. Selling 2 lakh Duo units would represent about 0.5% of this established user base, indicating a highly selective market penetration strategy for Apple's first foldable offering.
Financing Fuels Premium Sales
The premium smartphone market in India, defined by devices above ₹30,000, accounted for 22% of shipments in 2025 and saw an 11% year-on-year growth. Apple held a substantial 28% value share in this segment. Crucially, nearly two-thirds of premium smartphone purchases through mainline retail channels were financed in 2025, highlighting the importance of flexible payment options.
Apple is facilitating purchases with No Cost EMI options, starting at approximately ₹48,817 per month for the 256GB model. The company has also demonstrated a strong financing presence, recording the highest average financing tenure at 17.2 months in Q2 2026, which could ease the burden of the Duo's high price point.
Ecosystem Advantage and Market Uncertainty
For existing iPhone users, the Duo's appeal extends beyond its foldable design to the seamless integration within Apple's established ecosystem. Users invested in iOS, Apple services, and other Apple devices may find a compelling reason to upgrade to the Duo rather than switch to competitor foldables like those from Samsung.
Despite the optimistic sales projections, price remains the biggest uncertainty. Reuters reported that the global starting price of $1,999 (equivalent to the India price) could restrict the Duo to a limited group of wealthy early adopters. Industry analysts also anticipate that some existing iPhone users might adopt a "wait-and-see" approach, observing the performance and reception of Apple's first foldable generation before committing to such a significant investment.
Ultimately, the iPhone Duo's success in India hinges on whether a sufficient number of affluent iPhone users perceive it as a justifiable upgrade, solidifying Apple's position in the evolving foldable smartphone market.
