Apple Pay Nears India Launch: Axis Bank Partnership Reported for October 2026 Debut

· · 2 min read

Apple Pay is reportedly set to launch in India by October 2026, with Axis Bank emerging as its initial major banking partner. This move would introduce contactless payment services for iPhone users, expanding Apple's presence in India's digital payments ecosystem.

Apple Pay, the tech giant's contactless payment service, is reportedly on the verge of making its debut in India. Sources indicate a launch as early as October 2026, with Axis Bank expected to be the first major banking partner.

Initially, the service is anticipated to support contactless payments specifically through Axis Bank credit cards. This strategic entry into one of the world's largest digital payment markets would mark a significant expansion for Apple Pay, which has notably been absent from India until now.

How Apple Pay Transforms Payments

Apple Pay allows iPhone users to conduct secure, contactless transactions directly from their device, eliminating the need to open a separate banking or payment application. Users simply add eligible debit or credit cards, which are then tokenized for enhanced security, meaning the actual card number is never stored on the device or shared with merchants.

To make a payment, users tap their iPhone against a compatible card machine at the point of sale. This streamlined process offers a quick and secure alternative to traditional card swiping or chip insertion.

Expansion and Market Context

While Axis Bank is poised to be the inaugural partner, Apple has also reportedly been in discussions with other major Indian lenders, including HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank. However, commercial terms have yet to be finalized with these institutions, suggesting a phased rollout strategy.

The impending launch of Apple Pay coincides with India's broader advancements in contactless payment technologies. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) recently upgraded its Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-based services with a 'Tap & Pay' feature via the MyUPI platform. This initiative leverages NFC-enabled smartphones for contactless transactions, providing an alternative to the conventional scan-and-pay method and further preparing the market for advanced digital payment solutions like Apple Pay.

The introduction of Apple Pay is expected to significantly enhance the digital payment experience for iPhone users in India, integrating seamlessly into the country's rapidly evolving financial technology landscape.
