Amazon Bazaar Sees 5x Growth, Expands Value Commerce Beyond India's Tier 2 Cities

· · 3 min read

Amazon's value commerce platform, Bazaar, has seen five-fold customer growth since its launch, driven by budget-conscious shoppers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 Indian cities. The platform now offers over 3 crore products, with 80% priced under ₹300, and is expanding globally.

Amazon is significantly bolstering its commitment to value commerce, with its platform Amazon Bazaar achieving remarkable five-fold customer growth. This surge is largely propelled by shoppers in India's Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where customer acquisition has seen an eight-fold increase since the platform's inception.

Bazaar's Affordability and Reach

Sameer Lalwani, Head of Amazon Bazaar, revealed that the platform now boasts over 3 crore products, all priced below ₹500, with a substantial 80% of its selection available for under ₹300. This focus on affordability has positioned Bazaar as a crucial entry point for many first-time Amazon users, who often begin with low-ticket items before exploring higher-value purchases across the wider Amazon ecosystem.

Beyond customer growth, Bazaar has also seen a three-fold increase in both its seller base and product selection. This simultaneous expansion indicates a robust scaling of the value-commerce model, which Amazon is now integrating more deeply into its overall strategy.

Global Expansion and Strategic Integration

What began as an India-specific initiative, Amazon Bazaar, has evolved into a global playbook for the e-commerce giant. The model has been successfully replicated in 15-16 countries, operating under the 'Bazaar' or 'Amazon Haul' brand depending on the market, spanning established economies, the Middle East, Europe, and the US.

Amazon views the Indian e-commerce landscape as a series of 'speed lanes,' catering to diverse consumer needs. While the main Amazon marketplace serves branded and premium purchases, Amazon Now addresses instant and replenishment requirements, and Bazaar specifically targets shoppers seeking sharply priced products, particularly in fashion, home, kitchen, and lifestyle categories.

A key strategic move has been the seamless integration of Bazaar products into the core Amazon app. Previously requiring a separate storefront, Bazaar's offerings now appear within standard search results, recommendations, and curated collections, significantly enhancing visibility and accessibility for a broader customer base.

Leveraging AI and Empowering Sellers

Artificial intelligence is central to Bazaar's growth trajectory. Amazon utilizes AI to assist sellers in identifying optimal products and price points that resonate with consumers, while simultaneously improving product discovery across the entire marketplace. The company is also developing AI-generated shopping videos, aiming to create an engaging, 'reels-style' browsing experience for users.

The seller ecosystem has also seen substantial growth, with over 1.5 lakh active sellers on Bazaar. Seller sign-ups surged by 50% following the introduction of zero referral fees on products priced below ₹1,000 across more than 1,800 categories, contributing to a three-fold year-on-year increase in the seller base.

Amazon's proposition for Bazaar extends beyond just low prices, embodying the philosophy of "Sasta Bhi, Bharosa Bhi" (Affordable & Trustworthy). This commitment ensures that affordability is coupled with Amazon's established quality controls, reliable fulfillment network, and brand trust. With its nationwide reach to all serviceable pin codes, Amazon Bazaar is now firmly positioned as a mainstream pillar of Amazon's India business, poised to attract new shoppers as festive demand accelerates.
