Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli has officially confirmed that the 2027 ODI World Cup will mark his final appearance in the prestigious tournament. The veteran batter, who retired from T20Is in 2024 and Tests in 2025 to focus solely on One Day Internationals, expressed his profound motivation to clinch the coveted trophy.
Kohli made these significant remarks ahead of India's three-match ODI series against the West Indies, which commences on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram. This series is an integral part of India's early preparations for the 2027 global event.
Kohli's Driving Motivation for the Final Tournament
Speaking to JioStar, Kohli articulated his personal drive for the upcoming World Cup. "For me, it's the last World Cup I'm going to play for India. And that is my motivation. To leave everything out there. And of course, the goal is absolutely to win the World Cup. And whatever it takes, I'm absolutely ready," he stated.
The 2027 ODI World Cup is scheduled to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia during October and November. This will be Kohli's fourth ODI World Cup, having been a vital member of India's triumphant 2011 squad and consistently one of the team's most prolific batters.
Focusing on Contribution, Not Expectations
As India embarks on a new ODI cycle, Kohli also shared insights into his current approach to the game. He emphasized a shift away from external expectations, personal milestones, or outside pressures. Instead, his primary focus is on his batting performance and making meaningful contributions to the team's overall campaign.
The West Indies series offers crucial opportunities for emerging players to cement their places in the squad, with India's bowling unit also undergoing assessment. The current ODI setup features Kohli alongside captain Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma, with Gill previously noting Kohli's continued involvement in the team's strategic planning for 2027.
For Kohli, the path forward is clear: maintain competitiveness, excel with the bat, and maximize his final World Cup opportunity. With the tournament still over a year away, India's ODI preparations are entering a critical phase of experimentation, squad refinement, and strategic planning.
