Spain Tipped as Early 2026 World Cup Favorite by Opta Supercomputer

· · 2 min read

Opta's supercomputer has named Spain as the early favorite to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, simulating the tournament 10,000 times. France, England, and defending champions Argentina are identified as main challengers for the expanded 48-team tournament hosted across North America.

The highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to feature an expanded 48 teams across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is still some time away, but an early favorite has already emerged according to Opta's supercomputer predictions.

Spain Leads the Predictions

After running 10,000 simulations of the tournament, Opta's advanced model has identified Spain as the most likely champion. The Spanish national team won the title in 16.1% of these projections. Their path to the later stages also looks strong, with a 52.1% chance of reaching the quarter-finals, a 39.0% likelihood of making the semi-finals, and a 25.6% probability of playing in the final.

Spain is also heavily favored to top Group H, where they are slated to face Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Verde, with a 75.3% chance of securing the first spot.

Key Challengers Emerge

While Spain holds the top spot, several other football powerhouses are predicted to be strong contenders:

  • France: The runners-up of the last two World Cups are the second favorites, winning 13.0% of simulations. They are expected to dominate Group I against Norway, Senegal, and Iraq, with a 60.3% chance of topping their group. This tournament will also mark the end of Didier Deschamps' long tenure as coach, with Kylian Mbappé set to captain the team for the first time in a World Cup.
  • England: Entering the tournament after a dominant qualifying campaign under manager Thomas Tuchel, where they won all eight matches without conceding a goal, England is rated as the third-most likely winner at 11.2%.
  • Argentina: The defending champions, led by a 38-year-old Lionel Messi, have a 10.4% chance of retaining their title. They face Austria, Algeria, and Jordan in Group J and aim to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups.

Other Noteworthy Contenders

Following the top four, a strong contingent of European and South American teams also feature prominently in Opta's predictions:

  • Portugal: Given a 7.0% chance of lifting the trophy.
  • Brazil: With a 6.6% probability.
  • Germany: Holding a 5.1% chance.

Co-Hosts and Debutants

The three co-hosting nations face long odds for a title run:

  • The United States has a 1.2% chance of winning.
  • Mexico stands at 1.0%.
  • Canada ranks even lower in the projections.

The expanded 2026 World Cup will also welcome four debutant nations: Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan. While not expected to advance deep into the tournament, the new format offers these lower-ranked teams an unprecedented opportunity to reach the knockout stages.
