Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated that the 2026-27 season is "probably" his final year in professional football. The 41-year-old forward, currently playing for Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, shared his plans in a wide-ranging interview with Vogue, published on August 16, 2026.
A Storied Career Nears Its End
Ronaldo's announcement follows his participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, which he confirmed would be his last for the Portuguese national team. His contract with Al Nassr runs until June 2027, and he has signaled no intentions for further extensions beyond the current campaign.
"This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy," Ronaldo stated in the interview, reflecting on a remarkable 25-year career at the sport's pinnacle.
Future Plans Beyond the Pitch
While specific details remain private, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner revealed his post-football future is already "all mapped out." He acknowledged the emotional challenge of transitioning from professional sport but emphasized the importance of filling his time with diverse activities.
"Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one," Ronaldo explained. "And also have more fun, travel more, watch and play padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I’ve earned—what we’ve earned. Because after all it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice."
Chasing the 1,000-Goal Milestone
Before his anticipated retirement, Ronaldo remains focused on a significant personal target: reaching 1,000 official career goals. He is currently just 24 goals shy of this historic landmark. Despite stepping away from international duties, Portugal's new manager, Jorge Jesus, has affirmed that Ronaldo will continue to be selected for the national squad as long as he remains fit and active at club level, providing further opportunities to achieve his ambitious goal.
Ronaldo's illustrious career began at Sporting CP, followed by prolific spells at Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus before joining Al Nassr in January 2023. His nine years at Real Madrid were particularly impactful, where he set a club record of 450 goals in 438 appearances.
