The Indian Premier League (IPL) player auction for the 2027 season will be held in Goa in December 2026, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced. This decision brings the high-profile event back to India after three consecutive international editions.
IPL Auction Returns to India After Three Years
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed on Wednesday, September 23, that the mini-auction is scheduled for Goa this December. The previous three auctions were conducted at international venues, with the mega auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, followed by editions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The move to host the auction domestically again comes amid feedback from IPL franchises and an anticipation of a slightly smaller pool of players expected to go under the hammer for the 2027 season.
Goa Selected After Extensive Search
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal indicated that the auction is likely to take place between December 14 and 16, though exact dates are yet to be formally announced. He stated, “We have finalised Goa. The likely dates are December 15 to 16.”
The BCCI's primary criterion for the venue was a five-star hotel capable of accommodating over 100 guests, representing the large delegations from the 10 IPL franchises. Goa previously hosted the auction for the second IPL season in 2009. The board evaluated multiple Indian cities, with venue availability and logistical considerations playing a crucial role in the final selection of Goa.
Franchise Preparations Underway
The auction announcement coincides with several IPL teams already beginning to reshape their squads. Notable movements include wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant re-signing with Delhi Capitals and Kuldeep Yadav moving from DC to Lucknow Super Giants in a high-profile player swap. Additionally, Chennai Super Kings have appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their new head coach, signaling strategic shifts ahead of the upcoming auction.
