Balu Nayar Fights Lalit Modi Over IPL Credit: 'I Built It, You Got Limelight'

· · 2 min read

A public dispute has erupted between business veteran Balu Nayar and Lalit Modi over who truly built the Indian Premier League. Nayar claims he spent 18 months designing and developing the IPL, while Modi dismisses his assertions.

A long-standing perception of Lalit Modi as the sole architect of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is now being publicly challenged by Balu Nayar, a seasoned business executive and an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Bangalore. Nayar's recent LinkedIn post ignited a fierce debate, asserting his pivotal role in building the global cricket league from its inception.

The Credit War Ignites

Balu Nayar stated he dedicated 18 months to conceptualizing, developing, marketing, and monetizing the IPL while at IMG India. He recounted the league's precarious early days in 2008, where the project nearly collapsed multiple times, highlighting the intense efforts involved in securing media rights and franchise bids. Nayar emphasized the league's current success, noting its per-match earnings now surpass the Premier League and its valuation attracting major financial players like KKR and Blackstone.

Modi's Sharp Retort

Lalit Modi, widely credited with the IPL's creation, quickly responded to Nayar's claims with skepticism. In a pointed comment, Modi questioned Nayar's assertion, sarcastically asking what his own role was during that period and dismissing Nayar's post as 'crap' or 'stupid'.

Nayar's Detailed Rebuttal

Nayar countered Modi's remarks with an equally strong response. While acknowledging Modi's crucial role in gaining internal BCCI approval and selling the vision for the IPL, Nayar maintained that the core business structures and design elements were developed by others. He specifically stated, "You got the limelight, we got the thinking and business development done." Nayar claimed direct involvement in designing key aspects, including the league's structure, franchise model, media rights, franchise auctions, and broadcast architecture, asserting Modi was not present in those development rooms. He also challenged Modi's self-description as the IPL's "founder and architect," calling it a "generous description."

Who is Balu Nayar?

Balu Nayar's extensive career spans the telecom, media, sports, and technology sectors. According to his LinkedIn profile, he served as Managing Director of IMG India, where he was instrumental in the design, development, marketing, and monetization of the IPL during its formative years. His professional background also includes senior positions at Yahoo, Hutchison Telecom, STAR TV, and Ogilvy. He is currently a co-founder of Rudra Consulting, continuing his work in the business landscape.
