· · 2 min read

Argentina has unveiled the world's tallest Lionel Messi statue, an 85-foot (26-meter) monument in Cutral Co, Patagonia. The colossal steel and iron tribute depicts Messi with the World Cup trophy, celebrating his enduring legacy.

Argentina has unveiled the world's tallest monument dedicated to football legend Lionel Messi, an 85-foot (26-meter) statue in the town of Cutral Co, located in the Neuquén province of Patagonia. The colossal tribute was revealed amidst the ongoing excitement of the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the 38-year-old captain continues to lead the national team.

A Monumental Tribute to Messi's Legacy

Constructed from approximately 70 tonnes of steel and iron, the striking statue depicts Messi in a celebratory pose: kneeling with the coveted FIFA World Cup trophy held between his legs, one arm triumphantly raised. This artistic interpretation aims to capture the essence of his historic achievements and his profound impact on the nation.

Local sculptor Aldo Beroisa dedicated over a year to bringing this ambitious project to life. According to reports, Beroisa intended the monument to serve as a powerful symbol of Messi's enduring legacy and his unparalleled ability to unite Argentinians through their shared passion for football.

Surpassing Previous Tributes

The new Patagonian statue now holds the distinction of being the tallest Messi monument globally, surpassing a 70-foot sculpture previously erected in Kolkata, India. The Kolkata statue, unveiled during Messi's 2025 visit to India, was later removed earlier this year due to structural safety concerns and its vulnerability to strong winds.

The unveiling in Cutral Co comes during a renewed wave of national enthusiasm for Messi, often termed "Messi mania," as he participates in what many believe could be his final World Cup appearance. His performances at the tournament have further cemented his legendary status, inspiring a wide array of public tributes, from murals to large-scale artworks.

A Lasting Symbol for Argentina

For many fans across Argentina, this towering structure is far more than just a piece of public art. It stands as a powerful and lasting symbol of the player who delivered the nation's long-awaited World Cup triumph, forever transforming the landscape of football history and holding a unique place in the hearts of his countrymen.
