Tamil Nadu Appoints 'Jana Nayagan' Producer to Delhi Role, Sparks Controversy

· · 2 min read

Tamil Nadu has appointed K. Venkata Narayana, producer of the upcoming film 'Jana Nayagan' starring CM C. Joseph Vijay, as its Special Representative in New Delhi for one year. The decision has drawn criticism from the opposition, questioning the suitability of a film producer for the crucial administrative role.

The Tamil Nadu government's recent appointment of K. Venkata Narayana, the producer behind the film 'Jana Nayagan', as its Special Representative in New Delhi has ignited a political firestorm. Narayana's temporary one-year tenure in this key liaison position has drawn immediate scrutiny and strong criticism from opposition parties.

A Controversial Appointment

The order, issued on Friday, confirmed Narayana's role, though the specific terms and conditions of his service are yet to be formally announced. Narayana is widely recognized for his work on 'Jana Nayagan', an anticipated film featuring Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who also leads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party.

The controversy stems largely from Narayana's close ties to the actor-politician. He was notably present with Vijay during a meeting with Governor RV Arlekar in May, when Vijay was in the process of forming the government. 'Jana Nayagan', directed by H. Vinoth with music by Anirudh Ravichander and produced under KVN Productions, has itself been in the news due to reported delays in certification and an alleged online leak prior to its official release.

Opposition Questions Suitability

The appointment has provoked sharp reactions from the opposition. DMK Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson voiced strong objections, questioning the prudence of placing a film producer in such a vital administrative capacity. Wilson emphasized the significant responsibilities of the Special Representative, describing the role as a critical bridge between the state and Union governments.

According to Wilson, the Special Representative's duties encompass coordinating with Union ministers, facilitating the Chief Minister's engagements in New Delhi, relaying developments concerning central policies that impact Tamil Nadu, and providing official information to state Members of Parliament during parliamentary sessions. While acknowledging the government's prerogative to choose its appointees, Wilson argued that such a crucial position demands someone chosen with the state's administrative interests paramount. He contended that appointing a film producer could diminish the office's prestige and potentially make the state appear unserious in the national capital.

As of now, the Tamil Nadu government has not issued an official response to the criticism surrounding K. Venkata Narayana's appointment.
