Bollywood star Ranveer Singh is embroiled in a significant industry controversy following his abrupt exit from the upcoming film 'Don 3'. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has issued a non-cooperation directive against the actor, potentially complicating his future film projects, though it may not legally bar him from working.
The dispute reportedly stems from a three-film agreement that Ranveer Singh allegedly signed with Excel Entertainment, the production house behind 'Don 3'. Producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani reportedly lodged a complaint with the Indian Film & Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA) concerning Singh's last-minute withdrawal from the project. This complaint was subsequently forwarded to FWICE.
FWICE Takes Action Against Ranveer Singh
In response to the producers' complaint, FWICE has instructed its vast membership, comprising over four lakh cine employees, not to collaborate with Ranveer Singh. B.N. Tiwari, president of FWICE, stated that the federation had sent three notices to Singh regarding the matter, none of which received a response.
“Till the time he doesn’t come and attend a meeting with us, none of our members will work with him. He is not shooting for anything at the moment. If he begins, we will ensure none of us work with him,” Tiwari affirmed, highlighting the seriousness of the directive.
Legal Implications and Financial Impact
While the FWICE directive carries substantial weight within the industry, its legal enforceability is a subject of debate. Sonam Chandwani, managing partner at KS Legal and Associates, noted that such an order cannot legally restrain an individual's freedom to work. She explained, “From a strict legal standpoint, a 'non-cooperation directive' cannot automatically override contractual rights or restrain an individual’s freedom to work.”
Chandwani further clarified that under Indian law, any restriction preventing a professional from carrying out lawful employment could be challenged as arbitrary, citing Article 19(1)(g) of the Constitution, which protects the right to practice any profession. However, she acknowledged that the directive could indeed cause significant operational issues for Singh’s projects.
Producers reportedly claim that approximately ₹45 crore had already been expended during the pre-production phase of 'Don 3' before Singh's departure. The film, intended as a reboot of the popular franchise, had not yet commenced filming.
Ranveer Singh's Stance
Throughout the escalating controversy, Ranveer Singh has maintained public silence. A spokesperson for the actor issued a statement, emphasizing Singh’s respect for the film fraternity and all those associated with the 'Don' franchise. The spokesperson indicated that Singh has consciously chosen not to respond publicly to the various narratives and speculations.
“Ranveer Singh holds the highest regard for the film fraternity and for everyone associated with the Don franchise. Throughout the recent developments surrounding Don 3, he has consciously chosen to maintain silence, believing that professional discussions and personal equations are best handled with dignity, maturity, and mutual respect,” the spokesperson stated.
The statement concluded by reiterating Singh’s focus on his work commitments and his continued goodwill towards all involved, affirming his decision to maintain restraint and grace in such moments.
