India Selects 'Gondhal' for Oscars 2027
The Film Federation of India (FFI) has officially announced the Marathi thriller 'Gondhal' as India's entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards in 2027. Directed by Santosh Davakhar, the film was chosen from a competitive pool of 33 submissions spanning multiple Indian languages, a decision made after a rigorous 10-day review by the FFI selection committee.
P. Seshadri, chairman of the FFI selection committee, lauded the quality of submissions, noting that 'Gondhal' stood out among other strong contenders like 'Angh' and 'Ikkis' in the final deliberation.
Unveiling the Story of 'Gondhal'
Set in the vivid backdrop of rural Maharashtra, 'Gondhal' weaves a gripping thriller around the traditional Gondhal ritual—a night-long folk performance rich in music, dance, mythology, and religious traditions. The narrative follows Suman, a woman entangled in an unhappy marriage, whose illicit affair propels her into a perilous scheme involving her husband.
The film features a talented ensemble cast including Ishita Deshmukh, Kishor Kadam, Yogesh Sohoni, Nishad Bhoir, and Anuj Prabhu in pivotal roles. Veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja has lent his musical genius to the film's score.
A Director's Debut and Accolades
'Gondhal' marks Santosh Davakhar's debut as a feature film director. The movie garnered significant acclaim following its premiere at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa in 2025, where Davakhar earned the prestigious Silver Peacock for Best Director. It further solidified its critical reception by receiving the FIPRESCI Award at the 17th Bengaluru International Film Festival.
India's Oscar Journey and Marathi Cinema's Contribution
With 'Gondhal', Marathi cinema proudly marks its fourth official entry to the Academy Awards. Previous Marathi films to represent India include 'Shwaas' (2005), 'Harishchandrachi Factory' (2009), and 'Court' (2015).
While India has yet to secure a win in the Best International Feature Film category, several Indian films have received nominations, notably 'Mother India', 'Salaam Bombay', and 'Lagaan'. 'Water', though nominated, represented Canada.
The selection of 'Gondhal' is India's official submission to the Academy. The film must now navigate the Academy's own selection process to earn a nomination. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 14, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
