Bombay HC Restores Filmmaker Suneel Darshan's Plea Against Sunny Deol in Shelved Film Dispute

· · 3 min read

The Bombay High Court has reinstated filmmaker Suneel Darshan's 18-year-old appeal against actor Sunny Deol. The dispute concerns a shelved film, 'Good Morning India,' for which Darshan sought ₹20 crore in damages.

The Bombay High Court has revived an almost two-decade-old legal battle between filmmaker Suneel Darshan and Bollywood actor Sunny Deol. A division bench, comprising Justices Ajay Gadkari and Kamal Khata, on June 25, 2026, restored Darshan's appeal concerning the shelved film, 'Good Morning India,' which had initially been dismissed due to a lack of prosecution. The court did impose a cost of ₹15,000 on Darshan, to be paid within two weeks.

The Origin of the Dispute

The protracted legal saga dates back to 2008 when Suneel Darshan planned to produce 'Good Morning India,' with Sunny Deol cast in the lead role. According to Darshan, Deol failed to honor their agreement and ultimately withdrew from the project, leading to significant financial losses for the filmmaker. Darshan subsequently initiated legal proceedings against Deol, seeking a substantial ₹20 crore in damages for the alleged breach of contract.

Arbitration and Initial Rulings

The matter was referred to arbitration, with a former Chief Justice of India appointed as the sole arbitrator. The arbitrator acknowledged some merit in Darshan's grievances and directed Sunny Deol to pay ₹12 lakh. However, the larger claim of ₹20 crore was rejected, as Darshan reportedly failed to adequately substantiate and quantify the alleged losses. Both parties subsequently challenged this arbitral award before the Bombay High Court. Deol contested the ₹12 lakh payment directive, while Darshan appealed the rejection of his ₹20 crore claim. In April 2015, a single-judge bench dismissed both petitions, upholding the original arbitral award. This led both the producer and the actor to file cross-appeals before a division bench of the High Court.

Appeal Restoration

Darshan's appeal faced a setback on June 9, 2026, when it was dismissed after no legal representation appeared on his behalf during multiple hearings. Seeking to reinstate the appeal, Darshan filed an interim application through his new advocates, Zaheer Memon and Shilpi Jain. The lawyers explained that they had only taken over the case in April of the current year, and previous proceedings had been handled by another counsel. They further cited a technical issue that prevented them from being aware of the matter being listed on June 9, which resulted in the dismissal. Counsel for Deol opposed the plea, arguing that the court's cause lists had clearly shown the current advocates' names for Darshan's case on several dates. Nevertheless, after considering all submissions, the division bench granted the restoration application, subject to the imposed costs. With the appeal now reinstated, the long-standing legal dispute between Suneel Darshan and Sunny Deol over the abandoned film project is set to resume its course in the Bombay High Court.
