Zoho Founder Sridhar Vembu Posts on 'Karma' After Udhayanidhi Stalin's Arrest

· · 2 min read

Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu shared a cryptic post about 'karma' following DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin's arrest. Stalin's arrest related to alleged obscene remarks, occurring amidst previous controversies over his comments on Sanatana Dharma.

Zoho founder and chief scientist Sridhar Vembu recently shared a cryptic message on social media, hours after Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested by Tamil Nadu Police.

Vembu's post, made on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, did not explicitly name anyone or reference the arrest. He simply wrote: "Karma is a core concept in Sanatana Dharma. Thirukkural refers to karma as ஊழ்வினை. (the fate that arises from one's deeds)." This statement, made without further explanation, immediately drew attention due to its timing.

Context of Udhayanidhi Stalin's Arrest

Udhayanidhi Stalin's arrest stemmed from allegations of making obscene and "double-meaning" remarks directed at actor Trisha. This incident adds to a history of controversial statements made by the DMK leader.

Past Controversies Over Sanatana Dharma

Stalin has been a prominent figure in debates surrounding Sanatana Dharma. In September 2023, he sparked significant controversy by stating that Sanatana Dharma should be "eradicated" rather than merely opposed. He drew parallels to diseases like dengue or malaria, arguing that certain concepts cannot be opposed but must be abolished. Stalin contended that Sanatana Dharma inherently opposes social justice and equality, reinforcing caste and religious divisions.

Madras High Court Observations

In January of the current year, the Madras High Court weighed in on Stalin's 2023 remarks, deeming them to be hate speech. The court noted a century-long pattern of "clear attack on Hinduism" by the Dravidar Kazhagam and subsequently the DMK. It also highlighted a disparity where "persons who initiate hate speech are let scot-free, while those who react to such hate speech face the wrath of the law." Notably, despite cases being filed in other states, no action was registered against Udhayanidhi in Tamil Nadu concerning these specific remarks.

Sridhar Vembu's Previous Criticisms

This is not the first instance where Vembu has commented on Stalin's views regarding Sanatana Dharma. In May, the Zoho founder questioned the perceived lack of public outrage in Tamil Nadu over Stalin's repeated criticisms of "Sanatanam."

Vembu suggested that the limited reaction might be due to language differences, noting that the word "sanathanam" is not in regular use in Tamil, unlike "dharmam" or "aram," which are more commonly understood. He speculated that if Stalin had attacked "dharmam" directly, the response would have been far stronger. Vembu also claimed that Stalin's persistent remarks were inadvertently strengthening anti-DMK sentiment within the state.
