Zoho Founder Pitches Singapore-Style Death Penalty for Tamil Nadu Corruption

· · 2 min read

Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has proposed that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay consider adopting Singapore-like laws for high-level corruption and drug dealing, including the death penalty for future offenses. He also suggested significantly increasing ministerial salaries and an amnesty for past corruption.

Zoho founder and chief scientist Sridhar Vembu has urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to consider implementing Singapore-style laws to combat high-level corruption and drug dealing within the state. Vembu, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), specifically suggested the death penalty for future instances of such offenses.

Vembu's comprehensive proposal includes a drastic increase in salaries for ministerial positions and All India Services officials, such as IAS and IPS officers. He argued that this financial incentive, coupled with severe penalties, would create a robust deterrent. Furthermore, he advocated for an amnesty for past corruption cases, suggesting it would prevent endless debates and allow for a forward-looking approach to governance.

Drawing inspiration from Singapore's judicial efficiency, Vembu emphasized that while due process is crucial, it should not lead to decades of delays. He expressed admiration for Singapore's former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, stating he has studied his approach extensively and believes Tamil Nadu could learn from it.

However, Vembu's suggestions have not been without criticism. Financial advisor Senthilkumar countered the argument that higher salaries alone would eradicate corruption. He pointed to instances of wealthy politicians still facing corruption allegations and lower-level government employees accumulating substantial assets, suggesting the problem runs deeper than remuneration.

Senthilkumar contended that the core issues are a lack of accountability, transparency, and effective enforcement mechanisms, rather than simply the level of pay for officials.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, since assuming power in Tamil Nadu, has publicly committed to providing a "corruption-free government." He recently stated that he possesses files containing evidence of corruption from the previous DMK regime and intends to make them public at an appropriate time.

During a heated debate in the Assembly, DMK MLAs demanded the immediate release of such evidence. Vijay responded by asserting his knowledge of when and how to disclose the information, hinting that his current silence is strategic, perhaps to achieve certain positive outcomes, particularly in an upcoming by-election.
