Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath has invested ₹200 crore in CtrlS, one of India's leading hyperscale data center operators. This significant capital infusion, announced by the company, is complemented by an additional ₹50 crore investment from entrepreneur Sreeram Reddy Vanga, totaling ₹250 crore in fresh funding for CtrlS.
Driving India's Digital Ambitions
The investment arrives at a critical juncture as India's ambitions in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing are rapidly intensifying, placing considerable demand on the nation's digital infrastructure. CtrlS plans to deploy this new capital to expand its infrastructure and build out capacity across India, specifically targeting the escalating needs of enterprises and hyperscale clients.
Nikhil Kamath underscored the foundational role of robust data centers in the next decade's major technological shifts. "Every meaningful technology shift of the next decade, including AI, cloud, and digital public infrastructure, runs on data centers," Kamath stated. He added, "India is at an inflexion point where the underlying infrastructure either keeps pace or becomes the bottleneck. CtrlS has spent years building the kind of depth that does not get assembled overnight. That is what made this an easy decision."
Sreeram Reddy Vanga echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that India's AI and cloud aspirations necessitate world-class digital infrastructure at scale. Sridhar Pinnapureddy, Founder and CEO of CtrlS Datacenters, expressed enthusiasm for the new investors, noting, "It gives us the ability to think bigger, move faster, and continue building data center platforms that will support India's next phase of growth."
Capacity Expansion and Previous Funding
This latest funding round follows a substantial commitment of up to ₹7,000 crore from the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) earlier in June. That agreement involved CPP Investments injecting ₹4,000 crore to acquire an 8.2 percent stake in CtrlS and up to ₹3,000 crore for a joint venture to develop hyperscale data center campuses across the country. At the time, the deal valued CtrlS at ₹44,914 crore.
Pinnapureddy had previously highlighted India's immediate need for AI-ready infrastructure, stating, "India's AI moment is not on the horizon, it is already here. The demand signals from hyperscalers, cloud service providers, and enterprises are clear and unmistakable." The partnership with CPP Investments, he noted, aimed not just at expanding capacity but also at setting benchmarks for AI-ready infrastructure in a key global digital market.
CtrlS Footprint and Future Growth
Founded in 2007, CtrlS currently operates 19 data centers across nine Indian cities, boasting a combined capacity exceeding 370 MW. The company has ambitious plans for further expansion, with 4.4 GW of projects currently in various stages of execution. Beyond India, CtrlS has announced intentions to extend its footprint internationally, beginning with markets in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, starting with Thailand.
The combined investments from Nikhil Kamath, Sreeram Reddy Vanga, and CPP Investments position CtrlS strongly to capitalize on the surging demand for advanced digital infrastructure that is crucial for powering India's rapid technological evolution.
