Zerodha to Integrate Direct Mutual Fund Investing into Kite App Soon

· · 3 min read

Zerodha plans to enable direct mutual fund investments through its Kite app in the coming months, allowing users to manage stocks and MFs in one place. This integration aims for a streamlined experience, moving away from the separate Coin app for purchases.

Zerodha, a leading Indian discount broker, is set to integrate direct mutual fund investments directly into its popular Kite app within the next few months. This strategic move aims to provide a unified platform for investors, allowing them to manage both their stock trading and mutual fund portfolios through a single application.

Consolidating Investment Management

Currently, Zerodha users can view their mutual fund holdings on Kite, but actual purchases require switching to the separate Coin app. Neelesh Verma, Zerodha's head of mutual funds, confirmed that the upcoming integration will eliminate this need, bringing all direct mutual fund transactions onto Kite. This development is particularly beneficial for the more than 65 lakh active investors on Kite who seek to consolidate their financial management.

Verma stated, "It will be a user-friendly experience because we do see investors who want everything on one app." The new feature will also allow customers to import their existing mutual fund investments from other platforms to Zerodha's Kite, further simplifying portfolio oversight.

Coin App to Maintain Focus on Passive Investments

Despite the integration, Zerodha will maintain the distinction between active and passive investing platforms. The Coin app will continue to operate as a dedicated platform for passive, long-term investments such as mutual funds, SIPs, NPS, and fixed deposits. "Coin will always be the passive-only platform where mutual funds will always be the core of it," Verma clarified, ensuring that users preferring a focused passive investment environment still have a dedicated option.

Expanding Zerodha's Mutual Fund Footprint

This integration is expected to significantly boost Zerodha's already substantial mutual fund business. The company currently serves over 3 million mutual fund investors and manages 5.6 million SIP accounts. Zerodha recently launched the Zerodha Arbitrage Fund, an open-ended equity scheme designed to capitalize on price differences between cash and futures markets, further diversifying its offerings.

Commitment to Direct Mutual Funds

Zerodha has consistently championed direct mutual fund plans, which are free of distributor commissions and generally offer lower expense ratios compared to regular plans. Founder Nithin Kamath has reiterated Zerodha's commitment to providing direct mutual funds for free, aligning with the company's low-cost discount-broking model. Kamath has previously emphasized how percentage-based fees in regular plans can erode investor returns over the long term due to compounding.

Coin has grown into one of India's largest direct mutual fund platforms, managing nearly ₹1.6 lakh crore in assets. Zerodha estimates that its customers have collectively saved thousands of crores in distributor commissions by opting for direct plans.

It is important to note that Zerodha exclusively offers direct mutual funds, meaning investors are responsible for researching and selecting their own funds. Regular mutual funds, in contrast, involve commissions paid to distributors who often provide fund recommendations to their clients.
