Zee Shares Plunge 13% After Sebi Bans Chandra & Goenka Over Land Pledge

· · 2 min read

Market regulator Sebi has barred Zee Entertainment founder Subhash Chandra and CEO Punit Goenka from the securities market for one year over an unauthorized land pledge. Following the order, Zee Entertainment shares crashed 13% today, impacting its market valuation.

Shares of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) plummeted by 13% in early trading today, reaching a low of Rs 100.40 against the previous close of Rs 115.45 on the BSE. This significant drop follows an interim order by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) that has barred ZEEL founder Subhash Chandra and CEO Punit Goenka from the securities market for a period of one year.

Sebi's Order: Unauthorized Land Pledge

The market regulator's action stems from an alleged unauthorized pledging of a Hyderabad-based property owned by Zee Entertainment. This land was reportedly used as collateral to secure loans amounting to Rs 726 crore for four entities belonging to the Essel Group, which is promoter-linked.

According to Sebi, this transaction was executed without obtaining the necessary approvals from Zee Entertainment's board of directors and its audit committee. The interim order alleges violations of the Prohibition of Fraudulent and Unfair Trade Practices (PFUTP) Regulations, alongside non-compliance with the Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements (LODR) Regulations.

Market Reaction and Company Response

The immediate consequence of Sebi's directive was a sharp decline in Zee Entertainment's stock price. The company's market capitalization plunged to Rs 9,878.94 crore. A total of 26.05 lakh shares were traded, generating a turnover of Rs 26.94 crore.

In addition to the ban, Sebi also imposed a total fine of Rs 1.48 crore. Zee Entertainment has issued a statement indicating that it is currently evaluating the contents and impact of the order and exploring all relevant options in response to the regulatory action.

Broader Context for Zee Entertainment

The regulatory scrutiny comes as Zee Entertainment navigates a period of significant corporate developments. The company's stock had hit a 52-week high of Rs 124.15 on August 22, 2025, and a 52-week low of Rs 68.10 on March 23, 2026, illustrating the volatility it has experienced.

This event adds another layer of complexity for the media conglomerate, which has also been in the news for fundraising efforts and other corporate strategies.
