Xerxes Desai: How His Bold Vision Built Titan and Revolutionized India's Watch Market

Xerxes Desai, the visionary founder of Titan, transformed India's watch market by convincing J.R.D. Tata to back his ambitious luxury watchmaking venture. His leadership led to the creation of iconic brands like Titan and Tanishq, establishing an Indian company on the global stage.

Xerxes Desai, a name synonymous with the revolutionary transformation of India's watch industry, left an indelible mark as the visionary founder of Titan. His bold pitch to industrialist J.R.D. Tata not only convinced the Tata Group to enter the luxury watch market but also laid the groundwork for one of India's most successful consumer brands, now encompassing watches, jewelry, and fashion accessories.

Early Life and Entry into Tata Group

Born in 1937 into a Parsi family, Xerxes Desai pursued his education at Elphinstone College, Mumbai University, before advancing to Oxford University. He joined the prestigious Tata Group in 1961, quickly rising through the ranks to become one of its most influential business leaders. Desai was married to Rajni Desai.

The Pivotal Pitch: Convincing J.R.D. Tata

A significant turning point in Desai's career arrived in the 1970s. Tasked by J.R.D. Tata with addressing financial losses at Tata Press, Desai began exploring new business avenues. It was during this period that he identified luxury watchmaking as a highly promising, albeit unconventional, venture for the Tata Group. Despite initial skepticism from Tata himself, Desai's compelling vision and persuasive arguments successfully convinced both J.R.D. Tata and the board to invest in the idea.

Founding Titan and Market Innovation

In 1986, Xerxes Desai officially founded Titan as a joint venture between the Tata Group and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO). The company established its manufacturing hub in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. Desai's strategic introduction of quartz watches to the Indian market quickly made Titan a household name. His ambition, however, extended beyond mere market penetration; he aimed to prove that an Indian company could compete with the world's elite watchmakers.

The Titan Edge: A Global Recognition

Desai challenged Titan's engineers to develop an ultra-thin watch capable of rivaling leading Swiss and European brands. The result was the Titan Edge, unveiled in 2002. Boasting a movement just 1.15 mm thick and an overall case thickness of 3.5 mm, the Edge achieved international recognition after its movement was tested and certified by Switzerland-based horological testing agency Chronofiable SA. This innovation allowed Titan to successfully introduce the Edge into select European markets, solidifying its reputation as a world-class watchmaker.

Expanding the Empire: Tanishq and Legacy

Having firmly established Titan as a premier watch brand, Desai further expanded the company's footprint by launching the hugely successful jewelry brand, Tanishq. His vision helped diversify Titan's portfolio, contributing significantly to its long-term success.

Xerxes Desai retired in 2002 after more than four decades with the Tata Group, succeeded by Bhaskar Bhat. He passed away on June 27, 2016, at the age of 79. His final rites were held in Hosur, a fitting tribute to the man who transformed the town into a major manufacturing hub and left an enduring legacy of innovation, entrepreneurship, and national pride.

The recent series, Made In India: A Titan Story, featuring Jim Sarbh as Xerxes Desai and Naseeruddin Shah as J.R.D. Tata, has rekindled interest in Desai's remarkable journey, based on Vinay Kamath's book Titan: Inside India's Most Successful Consumer Brand.
