Warren Buffett, the renowned investor, has reportedly put his annual donation to the Gates Foundation on hold. This marks a significant shift, as Buffett has contributed to the foundation every year since 2006. The reported pause, which could extend until his Thanksgiving letter later this year, stems from unresolved questions regarding the Gates Foundation's historical links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Buffett's contributions to the Gates Foundation have been substantial over the years, totaling an estimated $48 billion in Berkshire Hathaway shares. His largest single donation, $6 billion, was made just last June, with a significant portion allocated to the foundation.
Foundation Addresses Epstein Connections
In response to public scrutiny, the Gates Foundation issued a statement earlier this year, acknowledging interactions between a small number of its employees and Epstein. The foundation stated these interactions were based on Epstein's claims of mobilizing philanthropic resources for global health and development. However, it emphasized that ultimately, no collaboration was pursued, no funds were created, and no financial payments were ever made to Epstein, nor was he employed by the foundation.
Further demonstrating its commitment to transparency, the foundation announced in April that it had commissioned an external review. This review aims to assess its past engagement with Epstein and to scrutinize current policies for vetting new philanthropic partnerships. The initiative was launched in March by CEO Mark Suzman, with support from Bill Gates and the Governing Board, though a timeline for its completion has not been provided.
Bill Gates's Testimony and Regrets
Earlier this month, Bill Gates provided closed-door testimony to the House Oversight Committee concerning his relationship with Epstein. In his opening remarks, Gates asserted that he had never witnessed or had any indication of Epstein's ongoing criminal conduct. He expressed deep regret for lending Epstein credibility through their association, acknowledging that he “should never have met with Epstein in the first place.” Gates also admitted that Epstein was aware of two affairs he had during his marriage to ex-wife Melinda French Gates. It is important to note that Bill Gates has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
The Gates Foundation has not yet commented publicly on Buffett's reported decision to delay his donation.
