Vizhinjam Port Welcomes 1,000th Vessel in Under Two Years, Joins Elite Global Ports

· · 2 min read

Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, operated by Adani Group, welcomed its 1,000th commercial vessel, the MSC Luciana, on Wednesday. This milestone was achieved less than two years after its first commercial ship, making it one of the world's fastest-growing ports.

The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, operated by the Adani Group, has achieved a significant milestone by welcoming its 1,000th commercial vessel, the mothership MSC Luciana. The vessel berthed at approximately 4:30 pm on Wednesday, marking a remarkable feat less than two years after the port handled its inaugural commercial ship.

Port authorities have lauded this accomplishment as a “remarkable achievement,” positioning Vizhinjam as one of the fastest ports globally to surpass the 1,000-vessel mark within two years of commencing operations. This rapid growth underscores its emerging prominence in the global maritime landscape.

Rapid Rise Since Launch

Vizhinjam received its first commercial vessel, the San Fernando of Maersk, on July 11, 2024. Full-fledged commercial operations at the deep-water port officially began on December 3, 2024. The latest milestone follows another major benchmark crossed earlier this year.

By May 2026, Vizhinjam had processed over 2 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) within just 18 months of starting operations, making it the fastest Indian port to reach this volume. According to Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, the port had already crossed the 1 million TEU mark in August 2025, effectively doubling its volume in a short span after trial operations began.

The port was formally dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2025, highlighting its strategic national importance.

Strategic Location Drives Growth

A crucial factor behind Vizhinjam's accelerated growth is its prime location along one of the world's busiest maritime corridors. Situated merely 10 nautical miles from the international shipping route that links Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East, the port offers direct access to a vital East-West trade axis that facilitates a substantial portion of global maritime commerce.

Its close proximity to this major shipping lane enables large container vessels to call at the port without significant diversions, thereby bolstering Vizhinjam's position as a burgeoning global transshipment hub and a key player in international trade.
