Shares of Vishal Mega Mart Ltd. experienced a significant rally in Monday's early trading, jumping more than 11% to reach a high of Rs 115.40. This sharp upward movement was primarily driven by two key developments: the board's decision to reappoint its Managing Director and CEO, and a favorable first-quarter performance assessment from Elara Capital.
Leadership Continuity Bolsters Investor Confidence
A major catalyst for the stock's surge was the announcement that Vishal Mega Mart's board approved the reappointment of Gunender Kapur as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for another five-year term. His new tenure is set to run from September 1, 2026, to August 31, 2031, pending shareholder approval. Kapur will also be redesignated as 'Founder, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer'.
Morgan Stanley maintained an 'overweight' rating on the stock following this decision, with the global brokerage firm suggesting that Kapur's continued leadership would help alleviate some market uncertainties. Kapur was initially appointed for a three-year period effective June 27, 2024, with his current term scheduled to conclude on June 26, 2027.
Strong Q1 FY27 Performance and Positive Outlook
Separately, Elara Capital provided a positive assessment of Vishal Mega Mart's Q1 FY27 performance, noting that results were in line with its estimates across key metrics like revenue, EBITDA, and PAT. The domestic brokerage highlighted a robust 10% same-store sales growth (SSSG) during the quarter, which also met its expectations.
Elara Capital further noted that the company's store expansion strategy remains on track, with 24 net new stores added during the quarter. Management expressed confidence in its ability to manage margin pressures within the existing cost structure, though they remain cautious about a potentially deteriorating operating environment. The brokerage reiterated its 'BUY' rating on Vishal Mega Mart stock, setting a target price of Rs 159, while maintaining its estimates and monitoring cost inflation and pricing actions.
Despite Gains, YTD Performance Remains Challenging
Despite Monday's impressive gain, Vishal Mega Mart's stock remains down by 16.65% on a year-to-date basis, indicating that the company is still working to recover from earlier market headwinds.
