Mumbai, India — Veteran investor Vijay Kedia has unveiled his strategic framework for identifying promising stocks amidst market corrections. In an exclusive interview, Kedia advised against prematurely seeking "multibaggers" during a downturn, instead emphasizing a focus on companies where the potential for further significant decline appears limited.
"A sick person first needs to come out of the ICU and recover before he starts discussing anything else," Kedia stated, drawing an analogy. He suggested that investors consider buying stocks that have already corrected 40-50% from their previous highs, provided they believe the risk of a substantial further fall is low.
Kedia's "RISE" Formula for Strategic Investments
Kedia introduced his proprietary "RISE" formula, highlighting four key sectors he believes are poised for long-term growth and offer compelling opportunities, particularly when valuations become attractive:
- R – Renewable Energy: Kedia foresees a significant electricity shortage in the coming years, positioning the power sector and its ancillary businesses as crucial growth areas.
- I – Infrastructure: Investments in infrastructure are fundamental to economic development and often provide stable, long-term returns.
- S – Security: This broad category encompasses cybersecurity, physical security, and defence-related businesses. With India's strategic imperatives, including plans to procure substantial defence equipment domestically and address technological gaps, this sector holds immense potential.
- E – Emerging Themes: This segment includes innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, electric vehicles (EVs), semiconductors, and data centers, which are shaping the future economy.
Opportunities in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs)
Commenting on public sector stocks, Kedia expressed optimism for the future of defence and railway companies. He cited Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's remarks on India's plans to procure approximately Rs 2 lakh crore worth of defence equipment from domestic sources, underscoring the sector's strategic importance in light of geopolitical challenges, particularly from China.
While acknowledging that many defence stocks may command premium valuations and not become "cheap" soon, Kedia remains positive about their long-term prospects. He also highlighted public sector banks, noting their impressive financial results and often single-digit price-to-earnings multiples. Kedia believes these banks can offer reasonable returns and provide a "cushion" to investors in the current market environment, even if they aren't "three-baggers or four-baggers."
Kedia concluded by reminding investors that "investing is a game of patience," emphasizing that immediate gains should not be the sole focus when entering these sunrise sectors.
