VFS Global COO: Rising Global Visa Anxiety, But Genuine Travelers Need Not Worry

· · 2 min read

Yummi Talwar, VFS Global's South Asia COO, acknowledges a global rise in visa application anxiety due to geopolitical shifts. She reassures genuine travelers, citing improved processing capacity and stabilized post-pandemic demand.

Global apprehension surrounding visa applications is on the rise, a trend attributed to evolving geopolitical landscapes and stricter immigration policies worldwide. However, genuine travelers have little reason to worry, according to Yummi Talwar, Chief Operating Officer for South Asia at VFS Global.

Speaking to India Today Global, Talwar acknowledged that this "visa anxiety" is not confined to any single nation, with applicants across various regions experiencing similar concerns. The uncertainty inherent in the visa approval process, coupled with the understanding that a visa is a privilege rather than an entitlement, often fuels this unease.

Geopolitical Shifts Fueling Concerns

Talwar highlighted recent geopolitical developments and the ongoing conflict in West Asia as significant contributors to the heightened anxiety among travelers. Public discourse, including statements from national leaders and citizen protests concerning migration, has increasingly framed visa approvals as a political matter, intensifying the perceived risk for applicants.

Despite these broader trends, Talwar firmly stated that individuals with legitimate reasons for travel should not be deterred. "If you have a genuine reason to be in that country or to go to the country, I think there is no anxiety," she affirmed, emphasizing the importance of a valid purpose for travel.

Post-Pandemic Processing Capacity Improves

The VFS Global COO also noted a significant stabilization in visa demand following the immediate post-COVID surge. Initial challenges with appointment availability and processing capacity have largely subsided. India, in particular, has seen visa application volumes return to near pre-pandemic levels.

VFS Global has actively worked to address capacity issues, expanding its operational capabilities and streamlining backend processes to enhance efficiency for embassies. This proactive approach aims to unlock more appointment slots and facilitate the growing volume of outbound travel from India, which Talwar described as a "very robust outbound market" with increasing travel numbers expected.
