In a significant development concerning the prominent Venu Srinivasan family, his wife Mallika Srinivasan and daughter Lakshmi Venu have publicly stated that no economic settlement has been reached regarding the distribution of family assets. Their declaration on Monday underscores that the family's extensive assets cannot be unilaterally controlled or distributed by a single individual.
The unresolved economic interests within the family necessitate a fair settlement, they asserted, advocating for a process built on transparent valuation, open discussion, and mutual consent among all stakeholders. This statement comes amidst ongoing questions about succession planning within the broader TVS group.
Context of the TVS Family Partition
The current dispute within the Venu Srinivasan family follows a larger partition of the 115-year-old TVS industrial group in 2020. That arrangement successfully divided assets among various branches of founder TV Sundaram Iyengar’s family through a comprehensive process involving asset valuation, mutually agreed allocation, and appropriate compensation.
However, Mallika and Lakshmi Srinivasan clarified that a similar, comprehensive process has not taken place within the Venu Srinivasan family specifically. They also noted that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in March 2024, which addressed the use of the TVS brand across business segments and a non-compete agreement, did not constitute an economic settlement for asset division.
Key Figures and Holdings
The statement surfaced shortly after TVS Holdings disclosed that Sudarshan Venu, Venu Srinivasan’s son and the current chairman and managing director of TVS Motor Company, had been identified as a significant beneficial owner via specific trust structures. Venu Srinivasan himself holds the position of chairman emeritus at TVS Motor.
According_to TVS Holdings’ annual report, the family and promoter group collectively hold a 74.45% stake in the company, with Venu Srinivasan's VS Trust accounting for 66.55% of this. TVS Holdings, in turn, possesses a 56% ownership in TVS Motor.
Seeking Amicable Resolution
Lakshmi Venu, who leads the automotive component manufacturer Sundaram-Clayton, has reportedly been seeking dialogue to achieve an equitable settlement. Her mother, Mallika Srinivasan, is understood to be actively encouraging all family members to resolve their differences amicably.
They further clarified that the allocation of management responsibilities does not equate to a division of family assets or the extinguishment of economic interests held by other family members. Mallika Srinivasan also separately clarified that TAFE, another prominent entity, belongs to a distinct family business group where she is a shareholder and has no bearing on the settlement within the Venu Srinivasan family.
“The fundamental issue is not about management positions, which have been compensated appropriately and commensurately. It is about the fair recognition of rightful economic ownership, which remains unresolved,” the statement concluded. “We believe that an early, fair, and amicable resolution is in the best interests of the family, its businesses, and all their stakeholders.”
